Rifleman John Charles CLAPHAM, S/28489, 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, is buried in Plot B1/981.

 

He died of wounds in a Military Hospital in London on 18th September 1918, aged 31, and was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery on 24th September 1918.

 

He was wounded during the attacks on the Hindenburg Line in early September.

  

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Charlton Kings War Memorial, the Charlton Kings (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial, the St Paul’s Church War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Frances Clapham, who resided at 29 Victoria Street, St Paul’s, Cheltenham.

Pte Benjamin George CLARKE, 4327, 4th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Force), is buried in Plot F/1163.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 25th August 1916, aged 46 and was buried in the cemetery on 29th August 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church School Roll of Honour.

 

At the time of his death he was residing at 5 Lower Park Street, Cheltenham and left a widow, Mrs Rachel Clarke, who later resided at 1 Somerset Cottages, Swindon Road, Cheltenham.

Pte (Signaller) Charles Frederick CLEMENTS, 240090, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Force), is buried in Plot B1/1003.

 

He died of illness at the City Hospital, Gloucester, on 27th March 1920, aged 25, and was buried in the cemetery on 1st April 1920.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Clara Clements, who resided at 2 Oolite Cottage, New Street, Cheltenham.

 

Pte Charles Edward COMPTON, 23267, 11th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot N/1739.   The grave is unmarked and is not recognised by the CWGC.

 

He was discharged from the Army on 18th May 1916 due to sickness and awarded Silver War Badge, registered number 192956.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham in late June 1917, aged 30, and was buried in the cemetery on 4th July 1917.

 

He is commemorated on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.

 

His mother, Mrs Maria Compton, resided at 27 Sun Street, St Peter’s, Cheltenham.

Pte Albert Reginald COOK, 2777, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Force), is buried in Plot B1/192.

 

He died of illness on 21st March 1916, aged 21, whilst a patient at the VAD Hospital in Suffolk Hall and was buried in the cemetery on 25th March 1916.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Mark’s Church Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Albert Edward and Emily Cook, resided at “The Rowans”, Rowanfield Road, St Mark’s, Cheltenham and he left a widow, Mrs Leah May Cook, who resided in Moseley, Birmingham.

Pte William Henry COOPER, 20249, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Force), is buried in Plot B1/973.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 2nd April 1917, aged 29 and was buried in the cemetery on 16th April 1917.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour and on the St James’ School Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, William James and Annie Amelia Cooper, resided at 3 Fairhaven Street, Cheltenham and he left a widow, Mrs Elizabeth Cooper, and three children at 35 Swindon Passage, Swindon Road, Cheltenham and later at 5, Devonshire Street, Cheltenham.

 

The CWGC headstone shows the amended date of death as 11th April 1917.  The headstone was previously inscribed with 2nd April 1917.   CWGC was informed in March 2011 of correct date date of death of 11th April 1917 and reminded again on 1st August 2016.

Pte Frank Ernest Sidney COX, 17633, 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment is buried in Plot N/9297.

 

He was wounded in action during the Battles of the Hindenburg Line and evacuated to the UK.   He died of these wounds in St George’s Hospital, London, on 29th September 1918, aged 22.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His parents, Henry and Clara Cox, resided at 14 Chapel Street, Cheltenham.

 

The inscription at the foot of his headstone reads ” His Servants Shall Serve Him, And They Shall See His Face”.

Pte John George COX, 34461, 1st Garrison Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot O/2108.

 

He was serving in the Class W Reserve when he died of illness in Cheltenham, aged 34, on 27th October 1918.

 

It was not until September 2016 that his name was added to the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Ada Lillian Cox, who resided at 3 Hamilton Place, St Paul’s Road, Cheltenham.

 

Lt Herbert Charles CRADDOCK, 62nd Depot Squadron RAF, is buried in Plot G/1399.

 

He was killed in a flying accident at RAF Rendcombe, near Cheltenham, on 27th November 1918, aged 24, and was buried in the cemetery on 3rd December 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.

 

His father, Charles Craddock, resided at the Sudeley Arms, Prestbury Road, Cheltenham.

 

Pte John William CRADDOCK, 17162, 9th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot W/11925.

 

He died of wounds in Netley Hospital, Southampton, on 10th November 1918, aged 22 and was buried in the cemetery on 18th November 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.

 

His father, Alfred Craddock, resided at 4 Western Cottages, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham.

 

The inscription at the base of the stone reads “Thy Will Be Done”.

Pte William Charles CREED, 4090, Gloucestershire Regiment and 648th Company Labour Corps, is buried in Plot A1/974.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham General Hospital on 7th December 1918, aged 46, and was buried in the cemetery on 12th December 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Ellen Creed, who resided at 15 Queen Street, St Peter’s, Cheltenham.

Pte Ernest Davis, Army Service Corps, is buried in Plot Y/12365.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 25th October 1918.

 

His name is commemorated on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.

 

His mother, Mrs Emily Mary Davis, resided at 9 Ewlyn Terrace, Fairfield Road, Cheltenham.

Rifleman John Joseph DOUGHERTY, 40257, 11th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, is buried in Plot P/2693.

  

He served in the Royal Lancaster Regiment before transferring to the Royal Irish Rifles.

 

He died of illness in Gloucester on 20th September 1920, aged 38, and was buried in the cemetery on 22nd September 1920.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Luke’s Church Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Florence Sarah Dougherty, who resided at The Post Office, Paragon House, Bath Road, Cheltenham.
