War Graves in this Churchyard

Pte Reginald Ashwin COOPER, 2nd Battalion Machine Gun Corps, is buried in the South-East part of the Churchyard.  

He died of illness in Shurdington on 30th July 1920, aged 30.

He is commemorated on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Mr and Mrs Albert Cooper resided at Horseferry Bridge Farm, Witcombe, Glos and he left a widow, Mrs Elizabeth Ann Cooper (nee Day) who resided at Poplars Cottage Farm, Shurdington, Glos.

The inscription on his grave reads “There is a link death cannot sever.   Love and remembrance live forever”.

Pte William Bernard LINDSEY, 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, died of wounds received in action in March 1918 at his home in The New Inn, Shurdington on 17th March 1920.

He is not commemorated on the St Paul’s Church, Shurdington War Memorial.

As Pte Lindsey’s final resting place in the churchyard could not be determined, “Buried Elsewhere In This Cemetery” has been inscribed on his headstone.

His parents, Mr and Mrs F Lindsey resided at the New Inn, Shurdington.

His sister, Mrs Gladys Dutton, requested the verse inscribed on the bottom of the stone, which reads “At The Going Down Of The Sun, And In The Morning, We Will Remember”.
