Able Seaman Albert Edward GREEN, HMS Opal, is buried in Row B, Grave 191.

He was drowned at sea when HMS Opal ran ashore in a snowstorm on South Ronaldsay, Orkney, on 12th January 1918.  He was 30 years old.

AB Green is commemorated on theCheltenham War Memorial and on the St James’ School War Memorial.

He was born in Cheltenham on 27th January 1888 and resided with his mother, Mrs Sarah Parsons, at 126 Naunton Crescent, Cheltenham prior to joining the Royal Navy on 27th January 1906.

He had only served on HMS Opal for three days before his death.  

Memorials in this Cemetery

The Memorial to the 840 men who were lost with HMS Vanguard.   Just before midnight on Monday, 9 July, 1917, the St Vincent class battleship HMS Vanguard  suddenly blew up in Scapa Flow, Orkney, most probably due to a magazine explosion.

Fleet Surgeon Edmund Cox was lost with the ship and he is commemorated on theSt Luke’s Church War Memorial.

He had resided with his cousin, Mr George Lindsay Cox of “Connellmore” Old Bath Road, Cheltenham.

Edmund Cox is commemorated on theChatham Naval Memorial.
