“Cheltonians” buried in this Churchyard

Lieutenant John St Erme CARDEW, Royal Navy, HMS Canada, is buried in this churchyard east of the church. 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 9th February 1917, aged 25.

Lt Cardew is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial (listed as RN Retired – indicating that he had been invalided out of the service prior to his death).

His parents, George Arthur Cardew MRCS and Alice Sophie Mary Cardew resided at 5 Fauconberg Villas, Cheltenham.

His cousin, Assistant Clerk Basil Cardew, Royal Navy, who was killed in action at sea on 1st November 1914 is commemorated in Prestbury (St Mary’s) Churchyard.

Captain Harold CHRISTIAN, Royal Navy, HMS President, is buried in a plot to the north of the church.

He was killed in a traffic accident in London on 15th November 1917 whilst serving with The Admiralty.   He was 50 years of age.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the All Saints Church War Memorial and the Christ Church War Memorial.

He was a native Cheltonian and his father was Admiral Henry Christian MVO.   His mother resided at “Heighthorne”, The Park, Cheltenham. 

In his will his address was “The Hut”, Tetcott, Devon.   Capt Christian was unmarried.

He is also commemorated on theTetcott War Memorial.

1.   Both are buried in civilian graves which are officially recognised by the CWGC and both are listed in the Debt of Honour Register.
