Lt Col Raymond Vernon DOHERTY-HOLWELL, DSO, Royal Engineers

Lt Col Herbert STONEY-SMITH, DSO, 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment

Lt Col Raymond Vernon DOHERTY-HOLWELL, DSO, Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot II, Row B, Grave 12.  He was killed in action on 9th January 1917 in the Ypres area of Belgium.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

He attended Cheltenham College between 1896 and 1899, but other connections with Cheltenham have yet to be traced.

Lt Col Herbert STONEY-SMITH, DSO, 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot I, Row E, Grave 23.

He was killed in action on 22nd October 1915, aged 47, in the Ypres area of Belgium.

He is commemorated on the St Stephen’s Church Roll of Honour and on the family grave in Cheltenham Cemetery.

He left a widow, Mrs Mabel Sophia Stoney-Smith who resided at “Burnbrae” Leckhampton Road, Cheltenham.
