Gunner Reginald EGGLETON, 121186, “D” Battery, 159th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, is buried in Plot M/1337/8.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 11th February 1919, aged 22, and was buried in the cemetery on 15th February 1919.

 

Gnr Eggleton is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Prestbury War Memorial and on the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) Roll of Honour Tablet.

 

His parents, William and Ellen Eggleton, resided at Marle Hill Gardens, Folly Lane, Cheltenham.

Staff Sergeant Simon ELLIOT, MSM, M2/053142, Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport Department) , is buried in Plot Q/10295.

  

This plot is not recognised by the CWGC and is therefore not an official war grave.

 

SSgt Elliot served in the BEF from 27th March 1915 until he was discharged to the Class Z Reserve on 15th April 1919.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham General Hospital on 4th February 1921, aged 40.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Sarah Elliot, and three children who resided at Hibernian House, 52 Naunton Crescent, Cheltenham.

 

Private William James EVANS, 2/7th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/125.

 

He was wounded by shellfire on 25th April 1918 during the Battle of Bethune and was subsequently evacuated to the Springburn Red Cross Hospital at Glasgow where he received treatment for chest injuries.

 

Pte Evans died of pneumonia as a result of these wounds on 22nd June 1918, aged 18, and was buried in the cemetery on 26th June 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour and on the Holy Trinity School Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Henry James Evans and Annie Evans, resided at 7 Sherbourne Street, Fairview, Cheltenham.

 

Private Sydney Albert FITTS, 24289, 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/947.

 

He was wounded in action on 21st July 1916 during the Battle of The Somme and was evacuated to a hospital in Manchester.   He died of these wounds on 8th August 1916, aged 32.

 

Pte Fitts is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Peter’s Church War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Alice Fitts, and five children who resided at 25 Queen Street, Cheltenham.

Pte Ernest Vernon FOGERTY, 263293, Royal Air Force Training Depot, is buried in an unmarked grave in Plot M/1436.

 

He was discharged from the RAF due to illness on 20th December 1918 and awarded a Silver War Badge.

  

He died of illness in Cheltenham General Hospital on 18th January 1920, aged 18 and was buried in the cemetery on 21st January 1920.

 

Pte Fogerty is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His parents, Harold and Helena Fogerty, resided at “Sunnyside”, Naunton Lane, Cheltenham.

 

Gunner Harold Edgar FOGERTY, 1756, Royal Marine Artillery, is buried in Plot M/1576.

 

He was demobilised on 6th March 1919 after 3 years war service and died of illness in Cheltenham on 28th September 1919, aged 27, and was buried in the cemetery on 1st October 1919.

 

Gnr Fogerty is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Hilda Eva Fogerty and his parents, Harold and Helena Fogerty, resided at “Sunnyside”, Naunton Lane, Cheltenham.

Pte Charles Frederick FREEBURY, 28728, 9th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot P/2442.

 

He was wounded in action on 29th April 1917 during the Battle of Doiran in Salonica and evacuated to a hospital to the 2nd General Hospital RAMC, London.   He died of his wounds on 7th March 1918 and was buried in the cemetery on 15th March 1917.

 

Pte Freebury is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St James’s Church Roll of Honour and on the St James’ School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Mary Ann Freebury, who resided at 6 Hermitage Street, Bath Road, Cheltenham.

 

His parents, Charles and Jane Freebury, resided at 20 Commercial Street, Cheltenham.

 

Notes:

1.   EGGLETON is buried in a civilian grave which is recognised by the CWGC.

2.   ELLIOT is buried in a civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.

3.   The FOGERTY brothers both died after the war and are buried in civilian graves which are not recognised by the CWGC.   Ernest Fogerty is buried in an unmarked grave.
