Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.


(Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

Enlisted into SWB on 10th August 1914.   To France 26th January 1915 to 1st Bn SWB.   Returned to UK due to sickness 1917.   Discharged 16th June 1917due to sickness (KRs 392.xvi) and awarded Silver War Badge, Serial 205656.   Died at The County Asylum Gloucester on 16th October 1918 of flu/pneumonia.

Commemorated on the Elmstone Hardwicke (St Mary Magdalene Church) Roll of Honour.   Served as 25589, Pte, 10th Bn Glos Regt.   Killed in action on 23rd July 1916 and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.   Birth registered in Cheltenham in Q3-1878.   Aged 38 at death.

This commemoration on the Cheltenham War Memorial refers to 213247, Pte, Douglas Oxford Arthur TOWNSHEND, 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles.   Died of wounds on 15th October 1916 at a military hospital in Etaples and buried in Etaples Military cemetery, Plot VIII, B 7A.   Birth registered in Hull in Q2-1896.   Date of birth 24th March 1896.   Aged 20 at death.   Parents Herbert and Ethel Townshend resided at 28 Airlie Street, Hull.

TOWNSEND, Robert Edward Lawrence

Commemorated in the DoHR as Robert Edward LAWRENCE-TOWNSEND.   Serving with 5th (Reserve) Bn Middlesex Regt when he died in Gillingham on 2nd March 1918.   Buried in Fort Pitt Military Cemetery, Chatham, Plot 1482.

Commemorated on the Staverton (St Catherine’s Church) Roll of Honour.  Born in Staverton and birth registered in Cheltenham in Q4-1893.   Served as 13470, Pte, 3rd Bn Worcs Regt and killed in action in France on 16th October 1914, aged 19.   Buried in Vauxbuin French National Cemetery, Plot II,C.6.
