Private Leonard William LANGSTON, formerly Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot N/9367.

 

He enlisted into and saw active service with 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment until discharged from the Army on 18th July 1916.   He died of illness in Cheltenham on 11th October 1918, aged 28.

 

He is commemorated on the Holy Trinity School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Ethel Amanda Langston, who resided at 28 Jersey Street, Cheltenham.

LCpl Frederick LAPWORTH, Motor Transport Depot Royal Army Service Corps, is buried in Plot Y/12371.

 

He was accidentally killed on 2nd April 1919, aged 28, on the railway line near Eltham Railway Station.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.

 

His mother, Mrs Sarah Ann Lapworth, resided at 4 Knowsley Parade, St Paul’s Road, Cheltenham and later at Tonmawr Avenue, Blaenavon, Monmouth.

Private Thomas LOVERIDGE, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/947.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham General Hospital on 25th November 1916, aged 48.

 

Pte Loveridge is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Adelaide Loveridge, who resided at Cumberland House, Grove Street, Lower High Street, Cheltenham and later at 4 Cow Lane, Swindon Village.

2nd Air Mechanic Henry Greville MARSHALL, Royal Air Force attached HMS President II, Tregantle, is buried in Plot P/2623A.

 

He died of illness in the Royal Naval Hospital Devonport on 22nd April 1918, aged 18.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Cheltenham Grammar School Roll of Honour and on the Highbury Congregational Church Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Dale and Annie Marshall, resided at 30 Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham.

Private Edward Francis McINTOSH, 4th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment TF, is buried in Plot E/7261.

 

He died of illness in the Scotton Military Hospital, Catterick Camp, Richmond, Yorks, on 18th May 1917.   He was 29 years old.   He was buried in the cemetery on 23rd May 1917.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He resided at 12, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham.

 

 

 

 

Private Charles James MEREDITH, 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/945.

 

He was wounded in action on 3rd July 1918 when the battalion attacked the village of Ovillers-la-Boisselle on the Somme.   He was so severely wounded that he was evacuated to a hospital in Northampton.   He died here on 27th July 1916, aged 36.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Peter’s Church War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Agnes Meredith, who resided at 8 White Hart Street, Lower High Street, Cheltenham.

Private John MIFLIN, 5th (Reserve) Battalion Machine Gun Corps, is buried in Plot N/9426.

 

He died of illness at the Machine Gun Corps Depot in Grantham, Lincs, on 27th November 1918, aged 35, and was buried at the cemetery on 4th December 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour.

 

He resided at 1 Angel Row, Fairview Road, Cheltenham.

Stoker Frederick MILLS, Royal Navy, HMS Benbow, is buried in Plot A1/2072.

 

He died of illness at the Queensferry Naval Hospital, Royal Naval Dockyard Rosyth, Scotland, on 3rd November 1918, aged 33.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His parents, Charles John and Madge Frances Mills, resided at 42 Keynsham Street, Cheltenham and later at 14 Morley Terrace, Fairhaven Road, Cheltenham.

Pioneer Joseph George MITCHELL, Railway Troops Depot Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot A1/122.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 22nd August 1920, aged 64.

 

He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Annie Mitchell, who resided at 1 Rutland Street, Cheltenham.

LCpl Christopher George MORGAN, 90th Company Army Ordnance Corps, is buried in Plot K/8655.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 10th March 1920, aged 44.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Florence Louisa Morgan, who resided at 4 Gratton Street, Cheltenham and later at 1 Angle Villa, Gratton Road, Cheltenham.

 

 

Private Albert Victor MORTON, 4th (Reserve) Battalion Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, is buried in Plot A1/947.

 

He died in Cheltenham on 30th June 1917 and was a patient at the Priory VAD Hospital. He was buried on 4th July 1917.

 

He was born in High Wycombe in 1893 and resided in Slough, Bucks, when he enlisted into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.   He also served with the Worcestershire Regiment.

 

He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

Sapper Arthur Edward NEWCOMBE, 117th Railway Company, Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot A1/976.

 

He died of illness on 24th December 1918, aged 29, in the Priory VAD Hospital, Cheltenham and was buried at the cemetery on 28th December 1918.

 

Sapper Newcombe is commemorated on the Charlton Kings War Memorial and on the Charlton Kings (St Mary’s Church) Roll of Honour Tablet.

 

His parents were Edward and Mary Jane Newcombe, who resided at Pike House, Battledown, Cheltenham.

  

Sapper Newcombe left a widow, Mrs Annie Newcombe, who resided at 8 Mapledene Terrace, Fairfield Avenue, Cheltenham.

 

The inscription at the foot of the headstone reads “Peace Perfect peace”.

Notes:

1.   LANGSTON is buried in an unmarked civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.

2.   The triple headstone (Loveridge, Morton, Pass) which covers three graves in one plot is a unique CWGC headstone in the cemetery.

3.   MITCHELL is a native Cheltonian but is not commemorated on any local memorial.

4.   MORGAN is buried in an civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.

5.   MORTON has no obvious family connection with Cheltenham and died in a local VAD hospital
