Band Sergeant Harry St Clair Clifford WEBB, 4th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot U/19874.

 

He died of illness whist based with his unit at Seaton Delaval, Northumberland on 10th January 1918, aged 40.   He was buried in the cemetery on 16th January 1918.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He left a widow and three children residing at Whitecross Square, Naunton Lane, Cheltenham.

Pioneer Valentine Ward WEBB, Railway Troops Depot Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot L/1072.

 

He died of illness at Cheltenham on 19th May 1917, aged 39.   He was buried in the cemetery on 26th May 1917.

 

Pnr Webb is commemorated on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Amelia Sarah Webb, who resided at 58 Rutland Street, Cheltenham.

 

 

Pioneer William WELSH, 6th Labour Battalion Royal Engineers, is buried Plot E/7373.

 

He died on 27th December 1915, aged 51, at the Cheltenham Racecourse VAD Hospital.

 

His death was registered in Cheltenham in the fourth quarter of 1915 but any other connection he had with Cheltenham is yet to be determined.

 

He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Private Bernard WHYTE, 11th Company Machine Gun Corps, is buried in Plot E/7340.

 

Pte Whyte died of wounds in the New Court VAD Hospital, Cheltenham on 27th July 1916, aged 19, being wounded in action during the Battle of The Somme.   He had previously served in the Leinster Regiment.

 

He was born in County Meath, Ireland.   His death was registered in Cheltenham in the third quarter of 1916 and no other family connection with the town has as yet been determined.   He was buried in the cemetery on 29th July 1916.

 

He is not commemorated an any memorial in the town or local area.

Sergeant Henry WIDDOWS, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Welsh Regiment, is buried in Plot N/1968.

 

He died of illness in the Lily Lane Hospital, Moston, Manchester, on 14th February 1919, aged 40 and was buried in the cemetery on 21st February 1919.

 

Sgt Widdows is commemorated on the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour and on the Holy Trinity School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Hannah Widdows, who resided at 1, Providence Square, Cheltenham.

 

(CWGC will amend the Regimental details on the headstone from Welch to Welsh in due course)

Pte Alfred John WILLIAMS, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, is buried in Plot J/8256.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 21st February 1921, aged 21.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Alfred and Fanny Williams, resided at 2 Nelson Buildings, Wellington Passage, Cheltenham.

Pte Edward WILLIAMS, 9th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/941.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 29th July 1920, aged 30 and was buried in the cemetery on 3rd August 1920.

 

Pte Williams is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Peter’s Church War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church School Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow who was residing at 42 Bloomsbury Street, Cheltenham.

Sgt Philip William Henry WILLIAMS, late RAMC, is buried in Plot P/2450.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 27th February 1918, aged 55.

 

Sgt Williams is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He resided at 7 Beaufort Buildings, Portland Square, Cheltenham.

Tpr Wilson Barrett WINTER, ex Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, is buried in an unmarked grave in Plot O/2046.   The photo shows the approximate area of his grave.

 

He was discharged from the Army on 31st December 1917 due to illness.   Whilst residing in Ireland, he sustained fatal injuries as a result of a fall from a horse on 14th March 1919, aged 25.   His body was returned to Cheltenham for burial and he was buried in the cemetery on 20th March 1919.

 

Tpr Winter is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He resided at 10 Gloucester Crescent, Gloucester Road, Cheltenham.

 

Notes:

1.   WILLIAMS PWH is buried in a civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.

2.   WINTER is buried in an unmarked grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.
