“Cheltonians” Uncommemorated In The Cheltenham Area

 

Many locally born people and others associated with the Cheltenham area who were killed or died as a result of the Great War, do not appear on local War Memorials or Rolls of Honour.   The reason for their non-inclusion will probably never be discovered.   This is a tribute to these Cheltonians.

 

Badgeworth

Gerald Alexander Clifford MOORE His father, Alexander Moore, resided at Badgeworth Court.   Served as Lt, in the 8th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).   Died of wounds on 11th July 1915, aged 24, after evacuation to Malta from Gallipoli and is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Badgeworth, in Cheltenham or the local area.   He is commemorated on the family plot in Badgeworth (Holy Trinity) Churchyard.

 

Henry Charles PRICE Born in Badgeworth in 1891 and enlisted in Cheltenham.   Served as 240322, Cpl, in the 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Killed in action during the Battle of the Somme, France,  on 21st July 1916.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.   He is not commemorated in Badgeworth, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Gilbert George SCRIVEN Born in Bamfurlong near Cheltenham in 1898 and enlisted in Merthyr whilst residing there.   Served as 1194, LCpl, in the Household Battalion.   Son of Charles John Scriven and Caroline Annie Scriven of Godfrey House, The Reddings, Cheltenham.   Killed in action on 12th April 1917 (11th April 1917 according to “Soldiers Died”) in the Roeux area of France during the Arras Offensive and buried in the Brown’s Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.   He is not commemorated in Badgeworth, in Cheltenham or in the local area but is commemorated on his brother’s grave, below, in Badgeworth (Holy Trinity) Churchyard.

 

Sidney A SCRIVEN Born in Badgeworth in 1899.   Son of Charles John Scriven and Caroline Annie Scriven of Godfrey House, The Reddings, Cheltenham and brother of Gilbert, above.   Served as 2Lt, in the RAF and died in the Merthyr area on 14th March 1920.   He is buried in Badgeworth (Holy Trinity) Churchyard.

 

Charles Henry WIGGALL Born in Badgeworth in 1895 and enlisted into the Army in Swindon whilst residing in Gloucester.   Served as 13983, Pte, in the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment.   Killed in action at Loos, France, on 28th September 1915.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Loos Memorial To The Missing, France.   He is also commemorated on the grave of his father in Great Witcombe (St Mary’s Churchyard). He is not commemorated in Badgeworth, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Bishops Cleeve

Albert GARDNER Served as Pte, 9198, in the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.   Born in Bishops Cleeve in the first quarter of 1893.   The 1901 Census records that he is residing with his parents in Kingswood , Gloucester.   Enlisted into the Army when residing at Westbury on Severn.   Killed in action in France on 15th March 1915 during the Battle of Neuve-Chapelle and buried in the Neuve-Chapelle British Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Bishops Cleeve or in the local area.

 

George Francis JUCKES Served as 2Lt, in the 6th Battalion Rifle Brigade, attached to 1st Battalion.   Born in Horsham in 1894.   Killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on 6th July 1915 and buried in Talana Farm Cemetery, Belgium.   He is not commemorated in Bishops Cleeve or the local area but commemorated on the grave of his parents, Ambrose and Henrietta Juckes, in Bishops Cleeve (St Michael’s) Churchyard.

 

Thomas Roland JUCKES Served as Lt, in the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, attached to 2nd Battalion.   Born in Horsham in 1896.   Killed in action during the Battle of Aubers Ridge on 9th May 1915.  He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial To The Missing, France.    He is not commemorated in Bishops Cleeve or the local area but commemorated on the grave of his parents, Ambrose and Henrietta Juckes, in Bishops Cleeve (St Michael’s) Churchyard.

 

Thomas TAYLOR Served as Pte, 12358, in the 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Born in Bishops Cleeve in the first quarter of 1890.   The 1901 Census records that he is residing with his parents in Kings Stanley , Gloucestershire.   Enlisted into the Army when residing in Cheltenham.   Died of wounds in a military hospital in Rouen, France, on 5th March 1915.   Buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen.   Not commemorated in Bishops Cleeve or the local area.

 

Boddington

Arthur AXFORD Born in Boddington and enlisted into the Army in Birmingham.   Served as 7968, Cpl, in the 10th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment.   Killed in action in the Ypres area of Belgium on 10th (or 19th) April 1918.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing, Belgium.   He is not commemorated in Boddington, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Charlton Kings

Walter Guy AYSCOUGH Major Walter Guy Ayscough, MC, served with 7th Duke of Connaught’s Own Rajputs, Indian Army, and was killed in action in Tanzania on 25th September 1917.   He is buried in the Dar-es-Salaam Military Cemetery.   His widow, Ada Beatrice Ayscough, resided at Moor End Park, Charlton Kings.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Vivian Albert BURCH Born in Charlton Kings in 1881 and enlisted into the Army in Southampton.   Served as 29522, Pte, in the 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment.   Killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 17th October 1916.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Christopher CAUSON Born Charlton Kings in 1888 and enlisted into the Army in Gloucester.   Served as 48834, LCpl, in the 81st Company,  Machine Gun Corps having previously served as 8131, Pte, in the Gloucestershire Regt.   Died of wounds in Salonika on 9th September 1918 and buried in the Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

James Henry COOPER Born in Cheltenham in 1893.   Enlisted in Birmingham into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and served as Pte, 5289.   Transferred to Machine Gun Corps and was serving with the 7th Battalion when died of wounds in Belgium on 22nd October 1918.   Buried in Duhallow ADS Cemetery near Ypres.   Son of Alfred and Annie Cooper of Cheltenham and recorded in the 1901 Census as residing with his mother at 1 Brook Cottage, Charlton Kings.   His widow, Ellen Matilda Cooper, resided at 128 Dale Road, Bournbrook, Birmingham.   He is not commemorated on the Charlton Kings War Memorial or in the local area.

 

William FORD Born in Gloucester in 1877.   Served with the Royal Marine Light Infantry and attached to the ship SS Jose de Larrinaga when he was killed in action at sea on 28th April 1917.   He was the son of Priscilla Dawes of “Fairview”, Lyefield Road, Charlton Kings.  He is not commemorated in the Charlton Kings area.

 

Albert Victor GODDING

 

Born Charlton Kings in 1895 and enlisted into the Army in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancs whilst residing in Withington.  Served as 1568, Pte, in the 1/9th Bn Manchester Regiment.  Killed in action in Gallipoli on 8th August 1915.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Helles Memorial To The Missing, Turkey.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.   (Mrs Pauline Rogerson of Manchester e-mailed on 26th February 2003 to inform that Pte Godding is commemorated in the Memorial Gardens, Ashton-Under-Lyn, Lancs.   She very kindly sent these photographs on 5th March 2003 and gave permission for their publication on the website).

Pte Godding is commemorated on the Withington (St Michael’s and All Angels Church) Roll of Honour.

 

Evan Victor JOSEPH, DCM, MM Born Charlton Kings in 1887, son of Thomas and Mary Joseph, and enlisted in Newport Mons, whilst residing in Bristol.   Served as 9189, Sgt, DCM and MM in the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.   Died of wounds in the UK on 6th February 1919 and buried in the Arnos Vale Cemetery Bristol.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.  (Many thanks to Mr Martyn Quantick for information regarding Sgt Joseph’s parents).

 

Maurice Llewellyn JOSEPH Born Charlton Kings in 1893 and enlisted in Cheltenham.   Served as 40958, Rfn, in the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles after transferring from the Army Service Corps.    Killed in action in the Somme area of France on 22nd March 1918.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Charles Roger RIPLEY

 

Born in Scarborough in 1888.   Parents were Sir Frederick and Lady Katherine Ripley, of Earl’s Avenue, Folkestone and he was the grandson of Sir Henry Ripley of Bedstone Court, Shropshire.   His uncle was Mr Henry Ripley of Ashley Manor, Charlton Kings.   Charles Ripley attended Cheltenham College between September and December 1902 and was commissioned into the York and Lancaster Regiment in 1910.   Lt Ripley was killed in action near Lille, France on 22nd October 1914 whilst serving with 2nd Battalion York & Lancs Regt.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial To The Missing.   His death was reported in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 29th October 1914.   Lt Ripley is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.
Hubert Charles ROME Born in Cheltenham in 1883 and served as Captain, in  the 20th (Brownlow’s) Punjabis, Indian Army.   He died of wounds on 18th December 1914 in the Beuvry area of France.   He attended Cheltenham College between 1898 and 1901.   The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 listed him as late of Charlton House, Cirencester Road, Charlton Kings.   In the 1903 Cheltenham Street Directory his father, Mr Thomas Rome, JP, is listed as residing at this address and later moved to Goring-on-Thames.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or local area.  Mr Mike Willoughby has been in contact and wrote that “Hubert Rome’s family lived at Goring on Thames around the time he set off to war and he is remembered on the Goring Village Memorial in St Thomas of Canterbury’s Churchyard.

 

William STEPHENS Born Charlton Kings, enlisted in Wath-on-Dearne Yorks, whilst residing in Swinton, Yorks.   Served as 202881, Spr, in the 64 Field Company, Royal Engineers.   Killed in action in the Ypres area, Belgium on 24th September 1917.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William John TAAFFE Born in Dublin in 1880 and served as 5231, CSM, in the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.   Married Rachel Kate Herbert of Ryeworth Bank Charlton Kings in 1907, in Kent.   Killed in action on 28th October 1914 during the Battle of Armentieres, France and buried in the Erquinghem-Lys-Churchyard Extension near Armentieres.  The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 listed him as late of Ryeworth Bank, Charlton Kings.   Not commemorated any memorial in the Charlton Kings area.   Rachel Taaffe was residing at 3 Royal Well Terrace, St Georges Road, Cheltenham in 1917/18.   His name is recorded as TAFFE in SDGW and CWGC and his death was reported in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 27th November 1914.

 

Charles Martin VASSAR-SMITH Born at Great Malvern on 5th June 1881.   Parents Richard and Mary Vassar Smith of Charlton Park, Cirencester Road, Charlton Kings.   Richard Vassar-Smith’s listing in Wikipedia can be found here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vassar-Smith_Baronets   Charles attended Cheltenham College between 1891 and 1896 and then attended the Royal Military College Sandhurst.   He joined the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in January 1901 and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa between July 1901 and July 1902.   He was awarded the Queen’s medal with four clasps.   As a Captain he went with his unit to France and Flanders and was severely wounded on 15th March 1915 in the St Eloi area of Belgium and was evacuated to a base hospital in Boulogne.   Here his wounded leg was amputated and his father travelled to the hospital to visit him.   He was “Mentioned in Despatches” in 1915.   It is not known if he saw further service in the Great War but his British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal were inscribed with the rank of Major.   Major Vassar-Smith died of illness in Rusholme, Manchester, on 25th November 1920, aged 39, and is buried in the family vault in St Mary’s Churchyard, Charlton Kings.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

Ernest WATSON Born Charlton Kings in 1895, enlisted in Bristol whilst residing in Plymouth.   Served as 13115, Pte, in the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.   Died of wounds on 26th March 1918 received in the Arras area of France.   Buried in the Bac Du Sud British Cemetery, Bailleulval, France.   He is not commemorated in Charlton Kings, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Cheltenham

John Lloyd William Howard ABELL Born in Cheltenham in 1887.   Served as Captain, in the 11th Battalion Cheshire Regiment and killed in action on 3rd July 1916 during Battle of the Somme.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area, however he is listed on the Brockworth War Memorial and commemorated on his father’s grave in Bentham (St Peter’s) Churchyard.   Stepson of Annie Abell of “Dunedin” Western Road, Cheltenham.

 

Frederick John ALLAWAY Born in Cheltenham in 1895 and enlisted into the Army in Newport.   Served as 34188, Pte, in the 9th Battalion Cheshire Regiment.   Killed in action in the Ypres area of Belgium on 20th September 1917.   He has no known grave and is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham but is commemorated on a Roll of Honour at St Swithun’s Church, Brookthorpe, Glos.

 

John Thomas ARKELL Born in Cutsdean, Glos, in 1895.   Resided in Cheltenham on enlistment into the Army in Bristol.  Served as 31449 Pte, in the 4th Bn Worcestershire Regiment.   Killed in action near during the Battle of Lys on 12th April 1918.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial To The Missing, Belgium.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area, however, he is listed on the Temple Guiting War Memorial.   His parents, John and Mary Arkell,  were residing in Lower Guiting.

 

Thomas Henry BAKER Born in Cheltenham in 1898.   Served as 374538, Rfn, in the 1/8th Battalion (attached 1/5 Battalion) London Regiment.   Killed in action on 28th March 1918, aged 20,  in the Arras area of France.   He has no known grave and is listed on the Arras Memorial To The Missing.   His parents, John and Alice Baker, resided at 118 Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham and later at “Lewinville”, Gloucester Road, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham.

Graham BALFOUR-OGILVY Born in Devon, aged 42.   Served as 1059, Cpl, in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force.   Died of illness on 10th January 1921 and is buried in Sandhurst, Gloucester, St Lawrence’s Churchyard, in the east of the churchyard.   His wife, Catherine, resided at 1, Cotswold Lawn, Painswick Road, Cheltenham.    He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Frederick BALLINGHAM Born in Cheltenham in 1880.   Served as 388514, Spr, in the 5th Siege Coy Royal Monmouth Royal Engineers.   Died on 20th June 1918 in a casualty clearing station in Ligny-St-Flochel, France and buried in the British Cemetery there.   His parents, John and Elizabeth Ballingham, resided in Cheltenham and Weymouth and he left a widow , Mrs Ethel Mary Ballingham, who resided at 3, Almshouse Street, Monmouth.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Harry George BANNER Born in Cheltenham in 1885.   Served as 1087, Pte, in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Killed in action in France on 21st December 1914 and is buried in the Guards Cemetery, Cuinchy.   Moved with his family to Gloucester prior to the 1901 Census.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but is commemorated on the Gloucester War Memorial.

 

Joseph Scorfield BEATTY Born in Armagh and served as 49241 Sgt Maj, in the Royal Defence Corps.   He died on 11th March 1919 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery in a CWGC plot.   Resided with his family in the Emmanuel Parish area of Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Alfred William BELCHER Born in Cheltenham on 8th October 1895.   Son of John and Gertrude Belcher of Farm Cottage, Alstone, Cheltenham.   Enlisted into the Canadian Army on 18th August 1915 and served as 443647, Pte, in the 54th Battalion Canadian Infantry.   Killed in action by shellfire in the Miraumont area of France on 16th November 1916.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

Kathleen Cecilia F BENNETT Born in Farnham in 1894 to Lt Col and Mrs E E Bennett who later resided at Mosborough, Grafton Road, Cheltenham.   Kathleen died of tuberculosis at Bournemouth on 16th December 1920 which she contracted whilst on duty as a VAD nurse at Bath War Hospital.   She is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William Harris BENNETT Son of William and Annie E Bennett of 2, Wolseley Terrace, Cheltenham.   Served as Captain, in the Middlesex Regiment attached Royal Air Force, who died of illness in Aden on 16th January 1920.   Commemorated on the Heliopolis (Aden) Memorial, Cairo, Egypt.   Not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Herbert Clifford BERNARD Born in Cheltenham in 1865.   Son of Robert Bernard MD, RN, Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals and Fleets, and Sarah Augusta Clifford.   He served in the Burma War (1885-1891) and commanded the 45th (Rattray’s) Sikhs from 1909 to 1914, after which he retired from the Indian Army.   Volunteered for service on the outbreak of the Great War and was appointed Commanding Officer of the 10th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.   He was killed in action on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of The Somme, whilst leading his unit.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William BLACKWELL Served as 7660, Pte, 7th Battalion Gloucestershire.   Parents, Mr and Mrs William Blackwell, resided in Elkstone, Glos.   Enlisted in Cirencester.   Killed in action in Gallipoli on 3rd January 1916.   Left a widow, Alice, of 1 Cakebridge Place, Prestbury Road, Cheltenham.   There is a commemoration to a W Blackwell on the Cheltenham War Memorial but it is thought that this refers to Pte William Thomas Blackwell, 2/4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, who died on 30th September 1918 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.

 

Gerald Wynter BLATHWAYT Born in Belvedere, Kent, on 30th June 1879.   Father was Mr Arthur P Blathwayt of Northwood Grange, Middlesex.   Commissioned into the Royal garrison Artillery in 1898 and was transferred to the Royal Field Artillery at the outbreak of the Boer War.   In February 1914 he was posted to 56th Battery, 44th Brigade Royal Field Artillery and deployed with this unit to France in August 1914.   He was killed in action on 14th September 1914 the first day of Battle of the Aisne and was initially buried in the gardens of the Chateau Verneuil.   After the war his body was re-buried in the Vendresse British Cemetery, France.   His death was reported in the Gloucestershire echo on 21st September 1914 where it was stated that his family were well known in the Dyrham, Glos, area and members of that family had close residential connections with Cheltenham.   A Gerald Winter Blathwayt is recorded in the 1918 Cheltenham Street Directory as residing at 11 St George’s Road, Cheltenham.   Captain Blathwayt is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Henry Wycliffe BREWIS, MC Served as Captain, 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Born in Islington in 1894.   Attached to 2/1st Queen’s Own Yorkshire Dragoons in Ireland and died after a road accident in Ireland on 4th June 1918.    He is buried in a CWGC recognised grave in Cheltenham Cemetery, in the same plot as his two sisters, Eleanor and Robina.   Son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Brewis, of “Mount Waltham,” Netherhall Gardens, London, N.W.3, and Tiger Hall, Church Stretton, Salop.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William Amos BROWNING Born in Cheltenham in 1897.   Served as 825574, Gnr, in C Bty/240th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.   Killed in action in Granezza area of Italy on 4th October 1918 and buried in the Granezza British Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but is commemorated on the Gloucester War Memorial.

 

Sidney Vickers James BULLINGHAM Born in Cheltenham in 1893.   Served as 38491, LCpl, in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade.   Killed in action on 26th October 1918 near Englefontaine during the Battle of the Sambre.   Buried in Romieries Communal Cemetery, France.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Robert Hitchings Collard BUSHELL Born in Edmonton, London, in 1896.   Served as 2Lt, in the 7th Battalion (attached 23rd Battalion) Royal Fusiliers.   Killed in action on 27th July 1916 during actions at Delville Wood.   He was originally commemorated on the Arras Memorial To The Missing – but, after a case we submitted as to CWGC in February 2005, he is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area although he is commemorated on the grave of a relative in Cheltenham Cemetery.

 

Albert CAINES Born in Cheltenham in 1885 to William and Catherine Caines of 11, Windsor Street, Cheltenham.   Husband of Annie Jane Caines of 32, King Street, Abertillery, Mon.   Enlisted in Abertillery and served as 1088, LCpl, in the 3rd Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment.   Killed in action in the Ypres area of Belgium on 8th May 1915.   He has no known grave and is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing, Ypres.   He is not commemorated any on memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.   His parents were still residing at 11, Windsor Street, Cheltenham in 1918.

 

Stephen Henry CHALLEN Born in Cheltenham in 1897.   Enlisted in Sheffield into the 8th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.   Killed in action on 10th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.   Buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-la-Boisselle, France.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

Claude Norman CHAMPION DE CRESPIGNY Lt Claude Norman Champion de Crespigny, 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen’s Bays) was killed in action in France on 1st September 1914.   His family organised the repatriation of his body for burial at St Andrew’s Church Hatfield Peverel, Essex.    He is one of 94 names printed in the Gloucestershire Echo on 26th July 1915 as “Cheltenham men who have fallen in the war”.   He attended Cheltenham College between September 1903 and Easter 1905 and is commemorated on the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour, the only connection with Cheltenham that has been established.

He is listed on page 108 of Volume 1 of “The Bond of Sacrifice”, a biographical record of all British officers who fell in the Great War

 

Walter Harry CLARK Born in Cheltenham in 1897 to Harry Clark, a police constable, and Beatrice Clark.   Served as 22083, Pte, in the 5th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment and died of wounds in Etaples, France on 12th April 1917.   Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Francis Charles Erlin CLARKE Served as Lt, in the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, attached 5th Squadron Royal Flying Corps.   Died of wounds in France on 11th October 1917, aged 21, and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, France.   Original battlefield grave marker is located near to the entrance to Cheltenham Cemetery but he is not commemorated on any memorial in the town or local area.   His connection with Cheltenham is unknown.

 

William Henry COLLIS Born in County Cork, Ireland.   Served as Captain, in the 7th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.   Killed in action on 9th May 1917 in the Ypres area of Belgium and buried in the La Laiterie Military Cemetery, near Ypres.   His parents Lt Col and Mrs William G Collis resided at “Snowdon”, Keynsham Bank, London Road, Cheltenham, most probably after the war.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Herbert Stanley COWELL Served as 35370, Pte, 1/6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.   His death on 27th May 1918 was reported in the Gloucestershire Echo.   Before the war he was employed at Messrs H G Norton, Electrical Engineers, 416 High Street, Cheltenham but his place of residence is unknown.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

John George COX Born in Cheltenham in 1883.   Served as 34461, Pte, in the 1st (Garrison) Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.   Died on 27th October 1918, aged 34, and buried in Cheltenham Cemetery in a war grave (Plot O/2108).   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   He and his wife Ada resided at 3 Hamilton Place, St Paul’s Road, Cheltenham.

William Henry CRADDOCK Born in Cheltenham in 1890 and enlisted into the Wiltshire Regiment at St Pancras, London, whilst residing in Campden Town.   Served as 14277, Pte, in the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment when he died of wounds in the Merville area of France on 14th March 1915.   He is buried in the Merville Communal Cemetery, France.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

George Rainier CRAWFORD Colonel George Rainier Crawford CB came to live in Cheltenham in 1914 just prior to him applying, at the age of 52, for reinstatement into the Army.   Deemed to old for active service, he was made Honorary Colonel of the 10th Battalion West Riding Regiment, a “Kitchener” battalion then training in Aldershot.   The battalion went to France in July 1914 but he remained at home.   He died in Cheltenham on 22nd August 1915 and is buried in Leckhampton (St Peter’s) Churchyard.   He is listed in ODGW and in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Mervyn CRAWSHAY Captain Mervyn Crawshay, 5th Dragoon Guards, was killed in action on 31st October 1914 near Langemarck, Belgium.   In the “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 he is listed as being of “Late of Lypiatt Terrace, Cheltenham”.   A notice announcing his death was published in the “Gloucestershire Echo” on 14th November 1914 and stated that the family resided at 7 Lypiatt Terrace.   Mervyn Crawshay is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

Alec Corry Vully de CANDOLE Born in Cheltenham on 26th January 1897.   Parents Mr Henry Law Corry Vully de Candole and Mrs Helen Edith de Candole resided at Springfield Lawn, The Park, Cheltenham and later at 6 Little Cloisters, Westminster, London.   Alec served in the 4th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment and at the time of his death (killed in action on 3rd September 1918) he was attached to 49th Battalion Machine Gun Corps.   He is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France (Plot IV, Row A, Grave 8).   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but is commemorated on the Cambridge (Holy Trinity Church) War Memorial which can be viewed here.   His entry in Wikipedia can be seen here.

 

William Maddox DAVIES Born in Cheltenham in 1884.   His parents, William and Esther Davies, resided at 9 Tivoli Terrace, Princess Road, Tivoli, Cheltenham.   Enlisted in Kingston-on-Thames whilst residing at New Malden.   Served as GS/50764, Pte, in the 7th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (after service with 30th Battalion Royal Fusiliers).   Killed in action on 5th April 1918 in the Arras area of France.   No known grave and commemorated on the Arras Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   SDGW records his name as DAVIS.

 

Ralph John DEE Born in Avening in 1896 and enlisted there into the Royal Engineers.   Resided with his parents Frederick and Annie Dee of “The Cross”, Avening.   Served with 70th Field Company Royal Engineers.   Killed in action on 8th December 1915 in the Richebourg-L’Avoue area of France and buried in the Le Touret Military cemetery, France.   His name is included in a Roll of Honour published in the St John’s Church Parish Magazine in 1916.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Oliver William DEVEREUX Born Cheltenham and residing in Tewkesbury on enlistment in Bristol.   Served as 26551. Pte, 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   KIA on The Somme, France on 30 August 1916.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.   A Pte O W Devereux is listed on the Kemerton War Memorial, Glos, and in the Church of St Nicholas Kemerton a William Devereux, Glos Regt, is listed.   Also on the lychgate of Overbury (St Faith’s Church), Worcs, a Pte Oliver William Devereux, Glos Regt, is commemorated whilst on a Roll of Honour in the church an Oliver W Devereux, Glos Regt, is listed.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Colin George Hamilton DONALD Only son of the late Archibald Hamilton Donald of Glasgow and Ada St Clair Donald, of the White House, Old Bath Road, Cheltenham.   He attended Cheltenham College and attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst between 1916 and 1917.   Served with 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders and was killed in action in France on 8th August 1918 and is buried in Gonnehem British Cemetery, near Bethune.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Fred EUSTACE Born Ashton, Berks, and enlisted at Bristol into the Gloucestershire Regiment whilst residing in Cheltenham.   Transferred as 718192, Private, in the 1/23rd Battalion London Regiment.   Killed in action on 24th March 1918 in the Arras area of France during the great German offensives of 1918.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area though in a notice in the Gloucestershire Echo of 29th April 1918 his death was announced.

 

William Hooton FIELD Born in Hastings (British Guiana in SDGW).   Enlisted in Liverpool into the Royal Field Artillery.   Served as 105623, Gnr, “A” Battery, 82nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.   Died of wounds in Belgium on 4th January 1918 and is buried in the Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.   Parents James Hooton Field and Gertrude Field, resided at 3 Alstone Villas, Grange Crescent, Gloucester Road, Cheltenham.   William Field is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Percy Daniel FORD Son of George and Sarah Ford of Rudford, near Gloucester.   He enlisted at Gloucester into the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars and was serving with the 1/3rd RGH at Tidworth when he succumbed to illness on 26th November 1915.   He is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Rudford and is commemorated on a memorial in the church.   He is also listed on the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars War Memorial.   He left a widow, Mrs Bertha Ford, who resided at the Pittville Police Station, Cheltenham after the war.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Richard FOX Born in Cheltenham and enlisted into 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in Birmingham whilst residing in Cheltenham.   Died of wounds on 30th November 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres and is buried in the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, near Ypres.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.   Notice of his death was published in the Gloucestershire Echo on 5th January 1918.

Walter William J FRUIN Born in Woodchester, near Stroud in 1896, and enlisted into the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment as 12430, Pte.   Died of wounds near Loos, France on 30th April 1916 and is buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France.   He is listed in a Roll of Honour titled “Cheltonians who have made the supreme sacrifice”, published by the Gloucestershire Echo in August 1916.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area, though he is commemorated on the Woodchester War Memorial.

 

Austin GAMMON Served as 13358, Pte, in the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment as a regular soldier.   Born in the Tewkesbury area in 1894, enlisted in Bristol whilst residing in Cheltenham.   Killed in action in the Le Cateau area of France on 14th September 1914.   He has no known grave and listed on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial To The Missing.  The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 listed him of “Cheltenham”.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   He may have been the brother of Edward Thomas Gammon who resided at 3 Moreton Terrace, Brookway Road, Charlton Kings.

 

William Victor GAPPER Born in Cheltenham in 1897.   Enlisted into 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers whilst residing in Cardiff.   Served as 32032, Pte, and killed in action in the Bailleul area of France on 20th August 1918 and is buried in the Outtersteene Communal Cemetery, France.   His parents, Alfred and Sarah Gapper were residing in Cheltenham at the 1901 Census and later resided at 15, Caerphilly Road, Senghenydd, South Wales.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William Alfred GILL William Gill was born in London in 1900 and resided with his aunt, Mrs Sarah Clare, at 32 Fairview Street, Cheltenham.   He enlisted in 1918 too late to see service in the Great War but was a member of the Army of Occupation in Germany.  He was serving with 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment when he was murdered by Sinn Fein in Cork, Ireland, on 28th February 1921.   He is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery and it was only in 2004 that he was officially recognised as a war casualty and entitled to a war grave.
Alexander Weston GORDON Served as Lieutenant Colonel, in the 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers.   Died, aged 59, on 20th December 1918 and buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.   His father was General John Gordon of the Indian Army.   He left a wife, Mrs Katherine Fanny Gordon who resided at Weston, Fermoy, Co Cork.   A John Lewis Randolph Gordon and Gwendolen Gordon are recorded as residing at Roden House, Pitville Gates, Cheltenham in the 1918 Street Directory.   Lt Col Gordon is not commemorated on any memorial in the town.

 

Frederick Stephen GROVES Served as 16261, Pte, 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Born in Hawling in 1887 and enlisted in Cheltenham in 1914.   Killed in action on 25th September 1915, the first day of the Battle of Loos and commemorated on the Loos Memorial To The Missing.   On the “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 he is listed as residing at  “Glendronach”, which is in Christchurch Road, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but is commemorated on the Hawling War Memorial.

 

John HALL Born in Cheltenham in 1875.   Emigrated to Canada, and enlisted into the Canadian Army on 24th February 1916.   Killed in action on 3rd June 1917 at the taking of Vimy Ridge serving with 50th Battalion Canadian Infantry.  Buried in the La Chaudiere Military Cemetery, Vimy, France.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the town.

 

Alfred Peter HANDY Born in Cheltenham and residing in North Cerney on enlistment in Gloucester.   Served as 2005 Pte, Royal Gloucestershire Hussars.   Died of wounds on 5th August 1916 in Egypt and buried in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   Commemorated on a North Cerney (All Saints Church) Roll of Honour and on a stone commemorative plaque in the church.

 

William Herbert HARTLAND Born in Birmingham in 1893.   Residing in Cheltenham on enlistment.   Served as 15138, Pte, 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters.   Killed in action in the Somme area of France on 14th April 1917 and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing.   Not commemorated in Cheltenham and the local area.   His father, Mrs Samuel Hartland, resided at “Hartville”, Hewlett Road, Cheltenham.

 

Arthur HAYWARD Born in London in 1899.   Enlisted into the Army in Weston Super Mare.   Served as 20606, Pte, in the 6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment and killed in action in France on 20th October 1918.   Buried in the Romeries Communal Cemetery, France.   His parents, Arthur and Jane Hayward, resided at 3 Oxford Buildings, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

George Edward HEWETT Captain George Edward Hewett was born on 22nd August 1872 in the Portsmouth area and attended Cheltenham College as a day-boy between 1885 and 1888.   His father, Lt Col Henry Hewett, resided at 3 Priory Parade, Cheltenham.   He was killed in action on 12th March 1915 in the Kemmel area of Belgium, south of Ypres, whilst serving with the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.   He is not commemorated on any local memorial in the Cheltenham area but is commemorated on the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

 

Campbell Melville Willis HEPWORTH Captain C M W Hepworth, RNR, was born in Cheltenham in 1849.   His parents, the Rev Robert Hepworth and

 

John Aldridge HOUGHTON John “Jack” Aldridge Houghton was born in Cheltenham in 1895.   His late parents, Mr and Mrs George William Houghton, resided at 69 Leighton Road, Cheltenham and he resided at 17 Denmark Villas, Hewlett Road, Cheltenham.   He served in the Great War and received a commission in the Royal Sussex Regiment.   After the war, he joined the Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary as a cadet and was killed in a land mine incident whilst on patrol near Ballinalee, Ireland, on 3rd February 1921.   He was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery after a full military funeral.

He is not commemorated in the Cheltenham or local area but is commemorated on The National Police Memorial.

 

William Walter Gilbert GRIFFITH Lt Col William Walter Gilbert GRIFFITH, 32nd Lancers (Indian Army) was killed in action on 22 April 1917 in Mesopotamia.   He has no known grave is listed on the Basra Memorial To The Missing.  He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.   He is commemorated on the family plot in Leckhampton (St Peter’s) Churchyard.

 

Francis Leonard IVIN Born in Cheltenham in 1896.   Served as 9766, Pte, in the 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.   Killed in action on 9th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, and commemorated on the Thiepval memorial To The Missing, France.   His parents, Thomas and Emily Ivin, resided at Hester’s Way Cottages, St Marks, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   Maybe related to Pte Albert Ernest Ivin who is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

Alfred Edwin JAKEWAY Served as 10830, Pte, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, wounded on 14th September 1914 and subsequently discharged from the Army.   Died in Cheltenham in January 1923, aged 30,  and buried in Cheltenham Cemetery (Plot E-950), too late to be included on the Cheltenham War Memorial and to late by 16 months be included in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

 

Arthur Forbes Gordon KILBY, VC, MC Born in Pitville Circus Road Cheltenham.   Serving as Captain with 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment.   Killed in action at Cuinchy, France on 25 September 1915 at which he was awarded posthumous VC (see Victoria Cross page).   Buried in the Arras Road Cemetery, France.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William Miles KINGTON Captain William Miles Kington, DSO, 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers,  was killed in action on 20th October 1914 in the Ypres area of Belgium.   He was born at Priory Lodge, Cheltenham on 25th April 1876.   In the “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 he is listed as “late of Priory Lodge”, Priory Street off High Street, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

John LAYNAN Born in Liverpool in 1882.   Prior to enlistment into the Army he was valet to Captain Harford of Cheltenham, and was a member of the Cheltenham RAOB.   He enlisted into the Kings (Liverpool Regiment) and died in the Seaforth Cavalry Barracks Hospital, Liverpool on 30th May 1915.   He is buried in Liverpool (Toxteth Park) Cemetery.

His death was reported in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 5th June 1915 and his photo was printed in the Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic published on 12th June 1915.   His name was listed in a Roll of Honour printed in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 26th July 1915, 8th August 1916 and 10th February 1921.   The latter requesting further details to be forwarded to Cheltenham Borough Council to support his name being listed on the Cheltenham Memorial.

Meyricke Entwisle LLOYD Capt Meyricke Entwisle Lloyd was born in 1880 and was killed in action on 24th October 1914 in the Becelaere are of Belgium, east of Ypres, whilst serving with the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers.   His parents, Mr and Mrs Henry Lloyd resided in Northamptonshire and his widow Mrs E G Lloyd, formerly Miss Elizabeth Grace Ramsey of 5 Montpellier Parade, Cheltenham, resided in Ruabon, Denbighshire.   His death was reported in the “Gloucestershire Echo” published on 28th October 1914 and his name was listed in a Roll of Honour of Dead Cheltenham Heroes published in the “Gloucestershire Echo” on 26th July 1915 but he is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

John Edwin LONG John Edwin James Long was born in Cheltenham in 1892.   His mother, Mrs Annie Elizabeth Long, resided at 29 Fairview Street, Cheltenham.   He served as Pte, DM2/170545, in the Army Service Corps and died after a short illness in the Cheltenham General Hospital on 22nd January 1921, aged 28.

James Atkinson LONGRIDGE Lt Col James Atkinson Longridge was born in Wandsworth, London, in 1875 to Michael and Frederica Longridge.   He was serving with the Indian Army (43rd Erinpura Regiment) when he died on 18th August 1916 and is buried in the Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, France.   His name is included in a Roll of Honour published in the St John’s Church Parish Magazine in late 1916.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Frederick Ernest LOWE Born in Whichford, Warwickshire and was 17 years of age at the 1901 Census.   Enlisted into the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in Cheltenham prior to transferring to the Labour Corps.   Killed in action on 5th December 1917 just after the Battle of Cambrai, France, and is buried in the Metz-en-Coutre Communal Cemetery.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.   He is listed on the Whichford War Memorial as one of the “natives of Whichford settled elsewhere”.   There was a notice in the Gloucestershire Echo dated 15th January 1918 announcing his death.

 

Charles George LYALL Captain Charles George Lyall was born in West Hartlepool on 28th February 1871.   He attended Cheltenham College as a day-boy between 1884 and 1888.   His father, Dr David Lyall, RN, resided at 1 Priory Place, Cheltenham.

His name was listed in a Roll of Honour published in the “Gloucestershire Echo” on 26th July 1915.   He was killed in action on 18th October 1914 in the Herties area of France during the Battle of La Bassee whilst serving with 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated on any local memorial in the Cheltenham area but is commemorated on the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

He left a widow, Mrs Marjorie Lyall, residing at “The Laurels” Alton Road, Roehampton, London.

 

Duncan George McGREGOR Born in the Bristol area in 1894 and served as 1982, Pte, in the 1/14th Battalion London Regiment.   Killed in action in Belgium on 1st November 1914.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing, Ypres, Belgium.   His parents, Angus George and Constance Mabel McGregor resided at “Wishmoor”, Hales Road, Cheltenham and his mother later resided at 2, Waresley Villas, Old Bath Road Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

Reginald Graham MERRIMAN Served as 1681, LCpl, in the 1/7th Battalion Manchester Regiment.   Killed in action in Gallipoli on 4th June 1915.   He has no know grave and listed on the Helles Memorial To The Missing, Gallipoli.   Not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   (Mrs Pauline Rogerson of Manchester has confirmed that he listed in the Roll of Honour of the Manchester Regiment in the Regimental Chapel located in Manchester Cathedral).

 

Joseph George MITCHELL Served as, 162526, Pioneer, Royal Engineers, died on 22nd August 1920 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.   Husband of Mrs Annie Mitchell of 1 Rutland Street Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Ernest Kerr MOLESWORTH Major Ernest Kerr Molesworth, Royal Engineers, was killed in action on 31st December 1914 in the St Hilaire area of France.   The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 listed him as late of Priory Street off High Street, Cheltenham.  His father, Colonel A O Molesworth, was residing at 3 Priory Street, Cheltenham, in 1916 and a Rose Miriam Molesworth was living at this address in 1918.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Edward Hampton MOSS Born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1884.   Attended Cheltenham College between 1893 and 1895.   Enlisted into the 18th (Public Schools) Battalion Royal Fusiliers in September 1914 and was subsequently commissioned into the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Killed in action on 25th September 1915, the first day of the Battle of Loos.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial To The Missing.   Mother, Mrs C D Moss, and brother Mr William Stanley Moss resided at Sussex House, Pitville Gates, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Thomas Harry NELDER Born in Cheltenham in 1895.   Served as Pte, 20406, 7th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and killed in action in Gallipoli on 7th October 1915.   Family moved to 169, Granville Street, Birmingham prior to his  enlistment.  He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Arthur Basil Stratford NOAKE Served as Major, Indian Army Reserve of Officers, attached to the Transport and Supply Corps.   Lost at sea from the Hospital Ship “Elloria” on 9th October 1919.   His parents were associated with Cleveland House, Evesham Road Cheltenham and his brother, Lieutenant Commander Basil Stratford Noake was killed in action and lost in the Bristol Channel on 6th October 1917 and commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.   Arthur Noake is not commemorated in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

William NORMAN Stoker (1st Class) William Norman, Royal Navy, HMS President, died on 6th May 1919 and is buried in the Victoria (Mont Fleuri) Cemetery Seychelles.   He was born in Cheltenham in 1885 but is not commemorated on any memorial in the town.   He is commemorated on the Chedworth Roll of Honour and on the Yanworth Roll of Honour.

 

Ernest Jonah PASS Served as 241524, Pte, in the 2/6th Battalion Gloucester Regiment.   He died on 3rd March 1919 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.   An article in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 5th December 1918 states that he was a returned Prisoner Of War have been taken by the Germans in the Cambrai area in early December 1917.   At the time he was serving the 2/6th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   He resided at Delholme Cottage, High Street, Prestbury and his widow, Mrs Elizabeth Pass, lived at Ivy Cottage, Mill Lane, Prestbury.   He is not commemorated on any local memorial though he is listed on Lechlade (St Lawrence Church) Roll of Honour.

 

Francis Howard PARGETER Served as 94230, Cpl, Labour Corps died of illness in Cheltenham on 20th April 1921.   He is buried in a CWGC plot in Cheltenham Cemetery.   He is not commemorated on any local memorial.

 

William Cyril PEARCE Born in Cheltenham on 16th June 1890.   Served as 781236, Pte, 46th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment).   Killed in action in the Potijze area of Belgium on 23rd October 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele.   According to the unit war diary, the battalion suffered very heavy shelling during that day.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

At the 1901 Census, William and his parents, Mr Richard Roberts Pearce and Mrs Elizabeth (Bessie) Sandford Pearce, and his eight brothers and sisters, resided at “Coombe Lodge”, Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham.   The family emigrated to Canada in about 1906.   William enlisted into the Canadian Army on 29th July 1915 at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

William Fleming PEEBLES Born in Madras, India in 1886.   Son of John Haughton Peebles and Katharine Peebles of 13 Park Place, Cheltenham.   Served as 2Lt, 5th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment attached to 113th Company Machine Gun Corps.   Killed in action in Belgium on 30th April 1917 and buried in Essex Farm Cemetery, Boesinghe, Belgium.  He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Gustavus Arthur PERREAU Served as Lt Col, 2nd Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles and killed in action in Mes0potamia on 9th March 1917.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.   Next of kin, Mrs Ellen Perreau of 16, Evelyn Court, Cheltenham.   Lt Col Perreau is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

Edward Stone PHILLIPS Born in Newport, Mons, in 1883 and attended Marlborough College between 1896 and 1901.   Went on to study at Pembroke College, Cambridge and gained a BA.   Lieutenant Edward Stone Phillips, 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment, was killed in action in Belgium on 8th May 1915.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing, Ypres.

A photo of him was published in the “Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic” dated 22nd May 1915 with a note that he was the grandson of the late Mr T Phillips of Kemerton Court, and of Mrs T Phillips, “Fauconberg”, Overton Road, Cheltenham.   He was also the nephew of Dr and Mrs Devereux of Tewkesbury.

He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.   He was the elder brother of Captain Leslie Phillips, below and two other brothers, Forrest Blake and Herbert survived the Great War.

 

Leslie PHILLIPS Born in Newport Mons, in 1887 and attended Marlborough College between 1901 and 1903.   Captain Leslie Phillips is listed in the Roll of Honour of Dead Cheltenham Heroes, published in the “Gloucestershire Echo” on 26th July 1915.   He was serving with 1st Battalion Welsh Regiment and was killed in action on 25th May 1915, aged 28, during the Battle of Bellewaarde, the finals actions of “Second Ypres”.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing, Ypres.

John Charles POCKETT Born in Cheltenham in 1884, son of Charles and Sophie Elizabeth Pockett.   Enlisted into the Army whilst residing in Birmingham.   Served as 4628, Rfn, in the 2nd Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps.   Killed in action in France on 30th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and buried in the Serre Road Cemetery No2, France.   He left a widow, Mrs E J Keeling (formerly Pockett) who was residing in Walsall after the war.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or local area.

 

Walter Penrose PRITCHETT Captain Walter Penrose Pritchett, 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, died of wounds received near Festubert, on 26th December 1914 in Boulogne, France.   He was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 21st December 1879 was commissioned into the Gloucestershire Regiment in March 1900.   He married Norma Forbes, daughter of the late Colonel G Forbes of Cheltenham, in November 1909.  The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 7th August 1916 listed him as “late of Cheltenham”.    His father, George Pritchett, resided at 39 Earlsfield Road, Hythe, Kent.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or local area.

 

William James PRYER Born in Cheltenham in 1886 and residing in the town at the 1901 Census.   Enlisted into the Army in Bristol whilst residing there.   Served as T/368557, Pte, 166th Aux Petrol Coy, Army Service Corps.   Died of illness at Montecchio Precalcino, Italy, on 31st October 1918.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or local area.

 

Thomas Norman PUCKLE Major Thomas Norman Puckle, Leicestershire Regiment attached 2nd Battalion Nigeria Regiment, West African Frontier Force, was killed in action on 30th August 1914 near Gurua in German West Africa (now Cameroon).   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lokoja Memorial, Province of Kabla, Nigeria.   Born in Mysore, India, on 16th February 1875 he was seconded to the Nigeria Regiment (West African Frontier Force) in October 1912.   He is one of 93 names printed in the Gloucestershire Echo on 26th July 1915 as “Cheltenham men who have fallen in the war”.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the surrounding area.

 

Elizabeth Hannah Jane ROBERTS Born in St Paul’s Cheltenham.   Served as a member of the WRAF when she died of illness in the UK on 28 October 1918.   Buried in a War Grave in Cheltenham Cemetery (Plot O.2107).   She is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

Henry RUSSELL Born and residing in Cheltenham and enlisted in Ferndale Glamorgan.   Served as 12894, Cpl, 9th Bn Welsh Regiment.   KIA in Ypres, Belgium, on 20th September 1917.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on The Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Percival John SEATER Born in Gateshead in 1894.   Served as 2Lt, 3rd Battalion (attached 8th Battalion) East Surrey Regiment.   Killed in action in the Arras area of France on 3rd May 1917 and is listed on the Arras Memorial To The Missing.   His parents, William and Alice Seater are buried in Cheltenham Cemetery and Percival is commemorated on their grave.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

Oliver St John SKEEN, DSO Served as Major, 62nd Punjabis and killed in action in Mesopotamia on 21st January 1916.   Buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.   Next of kin Mrs Mabel Skeen of 9, Evelyn Court, Cheltenham.   Major Skeen is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

Ernest Dudley SMYTHIES Served as Captain, Royal Engineers, and died of illness in London on 16th July 1918 whilst attached to the War Office Staff and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.   Nephew of Commander Edward Powell Smythies RN, who resided at Springfield Lawn, The Park, Cheltenham.   Capt Smythies’ widow, Mrs E H Smythies, resided at 60 Collier Road, West Hill, Hastings.   Captain Smythies is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

Montague STEVENS Served as Lieutenant, 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, and was killed in action on 7th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.   He has no known grave and is listed on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.   Recorded in the Debt of Honour at the CWGC as the son of Dr Alfred Felix and Mrs Stevens of Longville, Pitville Circus Road, Cheltenham, and is commemorated on their grave in Cheltenham Cemetery.  He is not listed on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

John Nuel SWANN Birth registered in Cheltenham in the first quarter of 1872.   Emigrated to Australia and was commissioned into the Australian Infantry on 7th May 1915.   Earmarked as a reinforcement for the 45th Infantry Battalion and left Australia for France on 14th April 1916.  Whilst serving as a Lieutenant in his battalion, he was killed in action in the Messines area of Belgium on 7th June 1917 and is buried in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery.  He is not listed on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

William SYKES-BANKS Served as Major, Dorset Regiment, General Staff Officer, attached to GHQ Dieppe, France.   Died of illness on 19th February 1916 and buried in the Janval Cemetery, Dieppe.   His wife, Eleanor Mary Clayton Sykes-Banks, resided at Moorend Park, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham.  He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

Cyril D’Albini SYKES-BANKS Son of William and Eleanor Sykes-Banks, above.   Born in the Portsmouth area in 1889.   Served as Major, No 1 RGA Officer Cadet School, Trowbridge, Wilts.   Died of illness on 4th November 1918 at the Sutton Veny Military Hospital, Warminster, Wilts and buried in the Portsmouth (Eastney) Cemetery.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

Raymond D’Albini SYKES-BANKS. Son of William and Eleanor Sykes-Banks, above.   Born in the Portsmouth area in 1890.   Served as Captain, 9th Bhopal Infantry, Indian Army.   Killed in action in Mesopotamia on 21st April 1917.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham or local area.

 

Leonard TAYLOR Born in Worcester in 1883.   Enlisted into 4th Battalion Worcester Regiment and served as 38209, Private.   Killed in action on 9th October 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Langemarck, Belgium.   His widow, Mrs Martha Taylor, was a living-in member of the staff of Lady Jane Maxwell, “Glen-Owen”, Lansdown Road, Cheltenham.   Leonard Taylor is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

John Caswell TIMMINS Born at Cheltenham and enlisted in Arundel Sussex.   Served as G/8728, Pte, 7th Bn Royal Sussex Regiment.   KIA on The Somme, France, on 7th July 1916.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Walter Roy TOSSWILL Born in 1894 in the Faringdon area.   Served as Captain, 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment.   Died of wounds on 12th August 1916 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.   He entered Cheltenham College at Easter 1907 whilst his parents Walter and Edith Tosswill resided at “The Oaklands”, Cheltenham.   They later resided at “Rosehill”, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but is commemorated on the Woolstone (St Martin’s Church) Roll of Honour.

 

Evan Edgar  UMFREVILLE Served as MS/3311, Sgt, Royal Army Service Corps.   Died of illness in Egypt on 30th April 1919 and buried in Alexandria War Cemetery, Egypt.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Taunton Elliott VINEY, DSO Served as a navy pilot as Flt Lt, 5th Wing, Royal Naval Air Service.   Died in aerial action on 21st May 1916 and is buried in Oostende New Communal Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but his parents are buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.

 

William Harold James WANT Born in Bowal, New South Wales, Australia in 1887.    He enlisted into the Royal Engineers whilst residing in Painswick.   Served as 97867, Sapper, 155th Field Company Royal Engineers.   Killed in action on 7th June 1917 in the Ypres area of Belgium and buried in the La Clytte Military Cemetery.   His mother, Mrs Mary Ann Want resided at 19 Bloomsbury Street, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham but is commemorated on the Painswick War Memorial.

 

Richard Annesley WEST, VC, DSO and Bar, MC, MiD* Born at Oxford Street Cheltenham in 1878, educated in Bath and served as a Trooper in the Boer War.   Commissioned into the North Irish Horse in 1914.   KIA at Vaulx Vraucourt, France on 2nd September 1918 at which he was awarded a posthumous VC (see Victoria Cross page).   Buried in the Mory Abbey Military Cemetery, France.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

William Wilfred WATTS Born in Cheltenham and enlisted into the Grenadier Guards in the town.   Served as 21483, Gdmn, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.   Killed in action in Belgium on 11th October 1917 and is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area but is commemorated on the Cowley (St Mary’s Church) Roll of Honour.

 

Harry Marrion WELSTEAD Lt Col Harry Marrion Welstead, 9th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed in action near Sulva Bay in Gallipoli on 7th August 1915.   He was born in Andover in 1860.   The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 listed him as “late of Balgowan House,  Cheltenham”.    His father, the late Arthur Henry Welstead resided at Selkirk Lawn, Cheltenham.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Lionel Naramore WERE Born in 1890 in the Preston area.   Served as 2028, Pte, Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps, died in Egypt on 12th May 1915 and is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery.   He is commemorated on his father’s grave in Cheltenham Cemetery.   His father, Captain Walter Were, late of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers died in the town on 12th January 1915.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

George J WHITEHURST Son of the late Thomas Tace Whitehurst, and Sarah Anna Catherine Whitehurst of 13, Lansdowne Crescent, Cheltenham.   Serving as Lieutenant, Royal Army Service Corps, and died of illness on 23rd December 1919 in Canada and buried in the Vancouver (Mountain View) Cemetery, British Columbia.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the surrounding area.

 

Philip Hansford Charles WIGGALL Born Cheltenham and residing in Bristol on enlistment in Bath.   Served as 9812, Pte, 6th Bn Somerset Light Infantry.   Killed in action on The Somme, France, on 16th July 1916.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham but is commemorated on the Churchdown War Memorial.

 

Alfred Tudor WILLIAMS Born in Cheltenham in 1885 to Robert and Gwendoline Williams and enlisted into the Regular Army prior to the Great War.   Served as T/25963, Driver, 2nd Division Train Army Service Corps.   Died in France on 24th August 1914 and buried in the Bachant Communal Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.   His family moved to 38 Well Street, Bangor prior to his death and Alfred resided there prior to his enlistment into the Army.

 

Frederick Thesiger WILLIAMS Lt Col Frederick Thesiger Williams, 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, died of wounds on 12th July 1916 in Rouen, France.   Born in Colchester in 1877.   The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916 listed him as “late of Cheltenham”.    He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Jethro WILLIAMS Born in Cheltenham, enlisted in Birmingham, probably as a regular soldier, whilst residing at Maldon, Essex.   Served as 6074, LCpl, 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards.   Wounded in the Ypres area and evacuated to hospital in Boulogne where de died of wounds on 5th November 1914.   He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Theodore Channing WOLFE Born in Aldershot in 1886 and enlisted in Portsmouth giving a home address in Cheltenham.   Served as 203106, Pte, 1/4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment.   Died of illness in Mesopotamia (now in Iran) on 29th September 1918 and buried in the Tehran War Cemetery, Iran.   His mother Mrs Arabella Louisa Wrig Wolfe was residing at 7 Bayshill Terrace, St Georges Road, Cheltenham in 1918.   Theodore Wolfe is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area though his name was listed in the “Gloucestershire Echo” published on 10th February 1921, which sought further information on those who were nominated to be commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

 

Cleeve Hill

Charles Arthur Gilbert MONEY Born in the Portsmouth in 1883.   Served as Major, in the 130th King George’s Own Baluchis, Indian Army.   Son of Colonel C Gilbert Colvin Money and Sophie Louisa Money.   Husband of Louise Charlotte Money of “Adderstone”, Cleeve Hill.   Died on 13th December 1916 and buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.   (Dar Es Salaam was the capital of German East Africa in 1914).   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cleeve Hill, in Cheltenham or the local area though he is commemorated on the grave of his parents in Cheltenham Cemetery.

 

Elmstone Hardwicke

Albert AKERS Born in Naunton in 1894.   He enlisted into the Army in Cheltenham and served as 13088, Sgt, in the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Died of wounds on 2nd April 1916 in Bethune, France and is  buried in Bethune Town Cemetery.   Son of James Akers of Hay Cottage, Elmstone Hardwick.   The “Roll of Honour” published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 7th August 1916 listed him as “of Copse Green Cottage, Elmstone”.     He is not commemorated on any memorial in Elmstone Hardwicke, in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Ernest Henry HARRIS Born in the Cheltenham area in 1898.   Served as 72143, Pte, in the Royal Army Medical Corps.  Lost at sea on 10th April 1917 when the hospital ship HMHS Salta was sunk off Le Havre, France.   Commemorated on the HMHS Salta Memorial in the Saint Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.   He is recorded in the Debt of Honour register at the CWGC as a “Native of Elmstone Hardwicke, Cheltenham”.   He is not commemorated on any memorial in Elmstone Hardwicke or in the Cheltenham area.   An “In Memoriam” notice in the Gloucestershire Echo dated 10th April 1918 states that he drowned on 10th April 1917 and that he was associated with Piffs Elm, near Cheltenham.   He is commemorated on his father’s grave in Staverton (St Catherine’s) Churchyard.

 

Leckhampton

Frank Ridley Farrer BOILEAU Col Frank Ridley Farrer Boileau was born on 29th November 1867.   Parents Colonel FW Boileau, CB, and Mrs Letitia Boileau who once resided at Whitley Villa, Leckhampton Road, (Near Moorend Road), Leckhampton.   He was a day boy at Cheltenham College between 1882 and 1885.After commissioning in the Royal Engineers in February 1887 he was promoted Colonel on 21st January 1910 and appointed to the General Staff.   He was GSO 1 at HQ 3 Division when war broke out in August 1914 and was wounded on 26th August 1914 at Ham, France, immediately before the Battle of Le Cateau.   He was evacuated to a military hospital in Boulogne but died of his wounds on 27th August 1914.   Col Boileau is buried the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, near Boulogne.   His death was reported in the Gloucestershire Echo published on 21st September 1914.   After the war, his widow, Mrs Mary A Boileau resided at Windout Hill House, Exeter.   Col Boileau is not commemorated in Leckhampton, in Cheltenham, or the local area, but is commemorated on the Lustleigh War Memorial, Devon.

 

Henry William HOPKINS Born in Leckhampton in 1891 and enlisted into the Army in Tewkesbury.   Served as 19752, Pte, in the 13th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Killed in action on 3rd September 1916 in the Beaumont-Hamel area of the Somme, France.   Buried in the Ancre British Cemetery, France.   He is not commemorated in Leckhampton, in Cheltenham or the local area.   He is commemorated on a stone plaque in the Church of St John The Baptist, Oxenton, Glos.

 

Harry Norman LEE Born in India in 1885 and attended the Cheltenham College as a Day Boy between September 1898 to December 1900.   He attended the Royal Military Academy Woolwich in 1901 and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery as a 2Lt in 1903 and transferred to the 59th Scinde Rifles (Frontier Force), Indian Army, in 1906.   He was killed in action at Givenchy, France, on 19th December 1914.   Captain Lee was “Mentioned in Despatches” on 20th November 1914 in the Despatch of Field Marshal French which was published in the London Gazette of 17th February 1915.   He is commemorated on his father’s grave in Leckhampton (St Peter’s) Churchyard.   He is not commemorated in Leckhampton, in Cheltenham, or the local area.

 

Prestbury

Charles Arthur ARCHER Born in Prestbury and enlisted in Birmingham.   Served as 47317, Pte, in the 2/8th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.   Killed in action in Belgium on 13th November 1917.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing   He is not commemorated in Prestbury, in Cheltenham or the local area.   

 

Basil St Merryn CARDEW Served as a Clerk (commissioned officer) in the Royal Navy and was killed in action at sea on 1st November 1914 during the Battle of Coronel whilst serving on HMS Monmouth, aged 19.   He was born in the district of Southwell, Nottinghamshire in 1895 and was the son of the Rev William Berry and Mrs Frances Augusta Garnsey Cardew of Perlethorpe Parsonage, Newark, Notts.   He is commemorated on the grave of his parents in Prestbury (St Mary’s) Churchyard but their and his connection with the village is unknown.   He was the cousin of Lt John St Erme Cardew, Royal Navy, who died of illness in the UK on 9th February 1917 and is buried in Great Witcombe Cemetery.   Basil’s uncle, Dr George Arthur Cardew, resided at 5 Fauconberg Villas, Cheltenham.

 

Edwin Owen HARRISON Born in Prestbury in 1882, enlisted in Gloucester whilst residing in Birmingham.   Served as 6406, LSgt, in the 2nd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment.   Killed in action on 7th July 1916 on the Somme, France.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.   He is not commemorated in Prestbury, in  Cheltenham or the local area.

 

Lawrence Herbert MARSHALL Born in Middlesbrough in 1884.   Served with 9 Fd Coy RE and died of wounds on 22nd April 1918 in a military  hospital in Rouen, France.   He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery, Rouen.   He is not commemorated in Prestbury, in Cheltenham or the local area.   According to records held by the CWGC his parents, Frank Herbert and Lucy Harriet Marshall, resided at “Sunnyside”, Prestbury, Cheltenham.

 

Daniel POCKETT Born in Prestbury in 1887.   He enlisted into the London Regiment in St Austell whilst residing in Aston-on-Clun, Shropshire.   Served as LCpl, 573008, in the 2/17th Battalion London Regiment.   Killed in action in Palestine on 8th December 1917 and buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery.   The 1901 Census records him living, aged 13, with his parents Samuel and Matilda Pockett in Evesham Road, Bishops Cleeve.   By the time of his death his parents had moved to Ross-on-Wye.

 

Shurdington

James Edward GROVES Born in Shurdington in 1896 and enlisted in Gloucester whilst residing in Norton.   Served as 15656, Pte, in the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regt.   Killed in action on 22nd November 1915 in the Le Touret area of France.   Buried in the Le Touret Military Cemetery.   He is not commemorated in Shurdington, in Cheltenham or the local area.   He is commemorated on the Priors Norton War Memorial.

 

William Bernard Henry LINDSEY Born in Shurdington in 1898.   He died of wounds at home, the New Inn Shurdington, on 17th March 1920 and was buried in Shurdington Cemetery on 20th March 1920.   He was serving with 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment when wounded in action near St Quentin – the wounds were so severe that there was little that could be done for him and the last eighteen months of his life he spent at home.    He is not commemorated in Shurdington, in Cheltenham or the local area.   Granted war casualty status in 2005 and a CWGC headstone was erected in St Paul’s Churchyard, Shurdington, in November 2006.

 

Staverton

Albert LEA Born in Staverton in 1880, son of Mrs Mary Lea of Bamfurlong near Cheltenham.   Enlisted in Cheltenham and served as 31449, Pte, in the 2/5th Battalion  Gloucestershire Regiment.   Killed in action in Cambrai, France, on 5th December 1917, aged 37.   He has no known grave and commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial To The Missing, France.   He is not commemorated in Staverton, in Cheltenham or the local area.   There was a notice in the “Gloucestershire Echo” dated 14th January 1918 announcing his death.

 

William Henry SMITH Born in Staverton in 1885 and enlisted in Cheltenham into the Regular Army before the war broke out.   Served as 7924, Pte, in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   He was killed in action in the Ypres area of Belgium on 23rd October 1914.   Pte Smith has no known grave and commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing.   He is not commemorated in Staverton, in Cheltenham or the local area.
