    Surnames – L

Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.

(It should be noted that the many Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

LANGSTON, Leonard William

This commemoration on the Holy Trinity School War Memorial refers to 13835, Pte Leonard William LANGSTON, 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   His birth was registered in Cheltenham in Q2-1887 and he was 31 at the time of his death.   He enlisted into the 8th Battalion at Bristol on 2nd September 1914 and served in France between 18th July 1915 and 21st February 1916.  He was returned to the Gloucestershire Regiment Depot on 22nd February 1916 to await discharge after a failed hernia operation and was subsequently discharged from the Army on 18th July 1916 as “no longer physically fit for war service” under Kings Regulations paragraph 392(xvi) and awarded a Silver War Badge.   He resided at 28 Jersey Street, Cheltenham with his wife Mrs Ethel Amanda Langston and children Leonard and William.   He died of illness on 11th October 1918 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Cheltenham Cemetery, plot N/9367.

Regimental number is 105352.   Died of illness in He was discharged from the Canadian Army on 10th August 1918 as physically unfit for further service.   He died on 23rd October 1921 in Saskatchewan.

This commemoration on the St Stephen’s Church War Memorial refers to 45455, Squadron Quartermaster Sgt (SQMS), 8th (King’s Royal Irish) Hussars, Corps of Hussars,  who died of illness on 30th May 1919 aged 42.   His death was registered in Cheltenham and he was buried in Worksop (Retford Road) Cemetery.   His widow, Mrs Mary Lawrie, resided at 3 Fairlight Place, Prince’s Road, Tivoli, Cheltenham.

LODGE, Frederick G

Birth registered as Frederick George Lodge in Cheltenham in Q3-1889.   Enlisted in to the Royal Field Artillery on 6th January 1915 and saw service with the BEF between 24th August 1915 and 20th May 1916.   He sustained serious injuries to his back on 20th January 1916 when he fell from his horse and was subsequently discharged from the Army on 10th July 1916, being awarded a Silver War Badge (Serial 171569) and a Chelsea Pension.   He died in the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, on 9th February 1920 after an operation on his back.    He is buried in Boston (Forest Hills) Cemetery, Section 24, Grave 1165.   It was not until December 2006 that the MoD accepted that Driver Lodge is an official war casualty and his name now appears in the DoHR.
