Cheltonians buried in this Cemetery

Sgt William DRAKE, 2nd Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, is buried in Plot II, Row E, Grave 6.

 

He died of gas poisoning on 25th September 1915, the first day of the Battle of Loos.   The gas was released by the Royal Engineers, but due to a change in the wind direction some of the gas blew back into the British trenches where many casualties were sustained.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.

 

His parents, William and Emily Drake, resided at 165 High Street, Cheltenham.

2Lt James Harold Lloyd ELLIOTT, 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, is buried in Plot IV,  Row G, Grave 1.

 

He was killed in action on 20th October 1914 near Lorgies, during the Battle of La Bassee.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

 

His parents. the late Captain Gilbert Lloyd Elliott, JP, DL, and Mrs Lloyd Elliott resided at 2 Paragon Terrace, Cheltenham.
