Lieutenant Colonel Henry Montfort GARDNER, Commanding Officer 1/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, is buried in Plot B1/1732.

He was wounded in action on 1st July 1916 resulting in blindness.   He died of illness in Cheltenham on 28th October 1918, aged 53.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

He and his late wife, Mrs Cecilia Marion Gardner, resided at “Tyrol”, Malvern Place, Cheltenham.

Private Augustus Frederick GIBBONS, 1/4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and, later, No 154 Territorial Force Depot, Bristol, is buried in Plot L/1173.

He was wounded in action in 1917 and discharged from the Army on 23rd November 1917.   He died from the effects of these wounds in Cheltenham on 11th July 1918, aged 37, and was buried on 16th July 1918.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Philip’s Church War Memorial.

His father, Frederick Augustus Gibbons, and his late wife, Mrs Sarah Ann Gibbons, resided at 80 Upper Bath Road, Cheltenham.

Private Charles William GILES, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/848.

He died of illness whilst training with his unit in Chelmsford on 24th January 1915, aged 22.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, Mr and Mrs W H Giles, resided at 6 Avenall’s Parade, Oxford Place, London Road, Cheltenham.

Private William Alfred GILL, 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment, is buried in Plot  A1/500.

He was murdered by Sinn Fein in Cork, Ireland, on 28th February 1921.   It was only in 2004 that he was officially recognised as a war casualty and entitled to a war grave.

He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.

His aunt, Mrs Sarah Clare, resided at 32 Fairview Street, Cheltenham.

Private George Albert Sidney GODWIN, 14th Battalion Welsh Regiment, is buried in Plot F/1118.

He was accidentally killed whilst on leave in Cheltenham on 26th March 1918, aged 33.   He was buried on 30th March 1918.

He is commemorated on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.

His parents, Thomas and Ann Godwin, resided at 39 Worcester Street, Cheltenham.

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Weston GORDON, 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers is buried in Plot A1/2210.

He died in the Royal Nursing Home, Parabola Road, Cheltenham, aged 59, on 20th December 1918 and was buried in the cemetery on 24th December 1918.

Col Gordon is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham.

His parents, General John Lewis Randolph Gordon (Indian Army) and Mrs Gwendolen Gordon, resided at Roden House, Pitville Gates, Cheltenham.

Private Austin John Birt GOULDING, 661st Agricultural Company, Labour Corps, is buried in Plot B1/982.

Having seen active service with 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment for over 3 years, he was transferred to the Labour Corps in 1918 but died of illness at Beechwood House, Newport on 22nd September 1918, aged 33.   He was buried on 27th September 1918.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, George Henry and Miriam Goulding, resided at 7 Calcutta Terrace, Cheltenham, and he left a widow, Mrs Laura Goulding, who resided at “Pengwaunydd”, Newport, Pembrokeshire.

The inscription at the foot of his gravestone reads “Brethren Pray For Us”.

Corporal Arthur Reginald GREEN, Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, is buried in Plot A1/2129.

He died of illness in Hounslow Military Hospital on 13th October 1918, aged 30.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Holy Apostles Church Roll of Honour and on the St Philip’s Church War Memorial.

His parents, Arthur Charles and Rowena Green, resided at 1 Raymond Terrace, London Road, Cheltenham.

Private John GREGORY, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, is buried in Plot K1/726.

He was taken as a Prisoner of War by the Germans on 27th September 1915 having been seriously wounded.   He was eventually repatriated home through the Red Cross on 18th August 1916 and died from the effects of his injuries on 4th November 1917, aged 26, and buried in the cemetery on 8th November 1917.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, Charles and Mary Ann Gregory, resided at 2 Fairhaven Street, Cheltenham.

Private Thomas John GRINNELL, 145th Company Machine Gun Corps, is buried in Plot A1/1710.

He was severely wounded in action during the Third Battle of Ypres in late 1917 and evacuated to the St Luke’s War Hospital, Halifax, Yorks.   He died of these wounds on 13th June 1918 and was buried on 19th June 1918.

Pte Grinnell is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.

His parents, Frederick and Frances Emily Grinnell, resided at 4 Hungerford Street, Cheltenham.

Rear Admiral William John GROGAN, Royal Navy, HM Yacht Sapphire II, is buried in Plot G/1395.

He was accidentally drowned in Portsmouth Harbour on 14th March 1915, aged 54.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Stephen’s Church Roll of Honour.

He left a widow, Mrs G W Grogan, residing at The Priory, Prestbury.

Gnr Charles HALL, 119th Heavy Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery, is buried in Plot A1/981.

He was wounded in action during the final advances in the last weeks of the war and was evacuated to a hospital in Kent.   He died of these wounds on 4th November 1918, aged 27.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St James’ Church Roll of Honour.

He left a widow, Mrs Maud Hall, who resided at 5 Hewlett Place, Cheltenham and later at Furze Cottage, Elmstone Hardwicke.

Pte Mark William HALL, 13th (Works) Battalion Devonshire Regiment and Labour Corps, is buried in Plot A1/135.

He died of illness in a hospital in the Salisbury area on 31st July 1917, aged 19.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, William John and Celia Kate Hall, resided at 2 Fairfield Walk, Leckhampton.

The inscription at the foot of the gravestone reads “The Lord Gave And The Lord Hath Taken Away”.

Private Edgar HARGREAVES, 19th Battalion The Kings Liverpool Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/967.

He died of wounds in the Naunton Park VAD hospital in Cheltenham on 26th May 1918, aged 39.   He was buried on 29th May 1918.

He and his family are from the Liverpool area is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or local area.

He left a widow, Mrs Eleanor Hargreaves, who resided at 77 Moss Grove, Sefton Park, Liverpool.

The inscription at the foot of his headstone reads “His Duty Nobly Done”.

Private Clement Horace HARPER, 13th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot M/1376.

He was discharged from the Army in March 1919 and died in Cheltenham on 7th March 1920, aged 38, and was buried in the cemetery on 12th March 1920.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

He left a widow, Mrs Ellen Harper, who resided at 12 St Paul’s Parade, St Paul’s Road, Cheltenham.

Private Alec James Tyler HARRIS, Depot The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment, is buried in Plot W/11743.

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 30th January 1919, aged 22.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.

His parents, William John and Susanna Harris, resided at “Bengeworth”, 33 Sun Street, St Peter’s, Cheltenham.

Private Percy St Clair HAWKINS, 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot Q/10318.

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 9th October 1917, aged 22.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, Frank and Caroline Comfort Hawkins, resided at 27 Granville Street, Cheltenham.

Private William H HAWKINS, 1st Battalion Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, is buried in Plot B1/919.

He was wounded in action in early June 1915 and evacuated to the Cheltenham Racecourse VAD Hospital where he died of these wounds on 27th June 1915.

He and his family were from Shropshire and he is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham.

His funeral was reported in “The Gloucestershire Echo” published on 1st July 1915.

Private Frederick William HICKS, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, is buried in Plot W/11754.

He died of illness in the Broadway Hospital, Sheerness on 27th November 1918.   He was wounded in action in March 1918 and returned to the UK for recovery.  

He was serving with the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion in the Thames and Medway Garrison at the time of his death.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, Raymond and Edith Hicks, resided at 5 Brunswick Street North, St Paul’s Cheltenham and his mother remarried in 1913 becoming Mrs Sheen, who resided at 12 Brunswick Square, Gloucester.

Private Bertie Charles HOOPER, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion South Wales Borderers, is buried in Plot A1/373.

He died of illness in the Liverpool area on 15th October 1918, aged 23.

Pte Hooper is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St James’ Church Roll of Honour.

His father, Mr Samuel Hooper, resided at 32 Francis Street, Cheltenham and later at 1 Victoria Place, Upper Bath Road, Cheltenham.

The headstone has recently been replaced.

Cpl Albert HUDSON, “G” Company Royal Army Medical Corps, based at Sutton Veney Military Hospital, near Warminster, is buried in the family grave in Plot J/8252.

He was killed in a railway accident at Warminster Station on 2nd September 1916, aged 20.

Cpl Hudson is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Cheltenham Grammar School Roll of Honour and on the St Mark’s Methodist Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Albert Edward and Maria Hudson, resided at Southborne House, Gloucester Road, Cheltenham.

Private William Charles HUMPHRIES, Gloucestershire Regiment and Labour Corps, is buried in an unmarked grave in Plot A/200.

He died of illness in the Over Sanatorium, Gloucester, on 21st January 1921, aged 24.

Pte Humphries is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Bethesda Methodist Church Roll of Honour.

His father, William Humphries, resided at 15 Kew Place, Bath Road, Cheltenham.

Notes:

1.   GARDNER, GORDON, GROGAN, HAWKINS P and HUDSON are buried in civilian graves which are recognised by the CWGC.

2.   GILES’ CWGC headstone was erected in June 2002.

3.   HARGREAVES and HAWKINS W H have no connection with Cheltenham and died whilst patients in local VAD hospitals.

4.   HUMPHRIES is buried in a civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.   There is no headstone and the photo shows the approximate area of the grave.
