Service documents, official records of those listed on this page and newspaper reports are being investigated to determine identity or, cause, date and place of death and subsequent burial, which may enable any corrective action to be taken at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or on the Roll of Honour pages.

BEECHER, A Commemorated on Cheltenham War Memorial and, possibly, the St Gregory’s Church Roll of Honour.   Identity of this person is unclear and the commemoration could well refer Sgt Arthur William Beecher, Canadian Army, ex RMLI, born in Lambeth. London.
BLACKWELL William Commemorated on Cheltenham War Memorial and St Peter’s Church War Memorial.   Identity of these commemorations is unclear as there are up to three of the name of William Blackwell who died whilst serving with the Glos Regt:

  • 17258, Pte, William Thomas Blackwell, 2/4th Bn Glos Regt, died in UK on 30th September 1918 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.   Birth registered in Cheltenham in Q2-1888.   At the Census, he was living with his parents at 20 Malvern Street, St Peter’s, Cheltenham.
  • 7660, Pte, William Blackwell, 7th Bn Glos Regt, killed in action in Gallipoli on 3rd January 1916.
  • 28953, Pte, William T Blackwell, 8th Bn Glos Regt, killed in action in France on 28th March 1918.
BORCHARD (or BURKHARDT) L M Commemorated on the Grammar School Roll of Honour (as L M Burkhardt) but no service records have been found.   The school magazine of 1918 states that he died in an accident in 1918, but no details of this have been traced.

 

BROWN  J Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial as serving with the Royal Field Artillery.   This soldier has not yet been identified and records of his service and details of his death and burial are not known.   Commemoration may well refer 646572, Dvr John Brown, DOW France 9th April 1917, of the Highworth/Swindon area.   He may well be commemorated on the Kempsford War Memorial.

 

CANDLER C W Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial as serving with the Canadian Infantry.   In the Canadian National Archives we have discovered a Pte Charles William Candle (born in Cheltenham and residing in Pilley Lane prior to his emigration to Canada).  We have informed the Canadian National Roll of Honour that this man may well be CAUDLE.   It appears that this soldier survived the war and returned to Canada.

 

CASEY Frank No regimental details for CASEY have been traced.   No record in SDGW  or in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.   Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the St John’s Church War Memorial.   It may well be that this soldier was known to the military authorities as KEARSEY, who was killed in action on 9th May 1915 whilst serving as Pte, 2548,  1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   The name of Kearsey is also commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

Frank Casey was the son of the late George Casey and the late Sarah Ann Casey (nee Hatherall), late of 4, Grosvenor Place, Cheltenham; he was born in Cheltenham in 1878 and by 1911 he was living with his sister at 4, Grosvenor Place, Cheltenham working as a Gasfitter

CHAMBERLAIN J E Listed on the Cheltenham War Memorial but no trace of this Royal Marine can be found in the DoHR at the CWGC or in the Register of Royal Marine Deaths 1914 – 1919.   There is, however, a Private Jessie  Edmund Chamberlain , PLY/2397(S), Royal Marine Light Infantry who was taken prisoner of war on 29th September 1918, subsequently repatriated on 20th November 1918 and demobilised on 3rd March 1919.   Investigations continue to determine death and burial details.   

 

CLIFFORD P Commemorated on the St Peter’s War Memorial.   This man has not been identified and records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.   However, a  CLIFFORD F is listed on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Paul’s War Memorial and it may well be that these commemorations refer to the same man.

 

CREED L D Commemorated on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial but no details of this serviceman have been found.   An Ernest Durham Creed, was born in 1894 in Cheltenham    In the 1901 Census he was living at 12 Hanover Street, Cheltenham, aged 7, and served in the Gloucestershire Regiment, as Pte, number 240331.   No record of this man’s death and burial have been found as yet.

 

DAVIS  E Commemorated on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial, as serving with the Royal Army Service Corps.   An Ernest Davis was born in Cheltenham in Q2, 1889.   He died on 25th October 1918 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.  In 1918, an Ernest Davis is recorded as residing at 9 Ewlyn Terrace, Fairfield Road, Cheltenham.    No service records have been traced as yet.   Not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

 

DRINKWATER John Edward P Commemorated on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.   Served as 241488, Pte, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Records of his death and burial are not known.   Not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

 

GAINER Hubert Commemorated on Cheltenham War Memorial, as serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment.   A Hubert Gainer serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment, residing at 38 Burton Street, Cheltenham is listed in the Roll of Honour published by the Gloucestershire Echo on 8th August 1916.   No date of death or burial record has been traced as yet.   Not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

Commemorated on Elms Roll of Honour.

 

GAY G Commemorated on Cheltenham War Memorial, as serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment.   This man has not been identified and records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.

 

GOULD K Commemorated on the St James’ School Roll of Honour but no service details have been found.  A Keneth (one ‘n’) Edward R Gould was born in Cheltenham in Q4, 1894 and in the 1901 Census a Keneth Gould is listed as age 6, residing with his parents in 9 Upper Bath Street, Cheltenham.

 

HALEY J Commemorated on Cheltenham War Memorial.   The identity of this commemoration has yet to be confirmed.   It may refer to 4491, Pte, HALEY, John Thomas, 6th Bn Glos Regt, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, whose wife Elizabeth Emma Haley, resided at 51a Jersey Street, Cheltenham and later at 8 Clare Place, Bath Road, Cheltenham.   His date of death and burial details have not been traced as yet

 

HALL E Commemorated on the St James’ School Roll of Honour but no details of this serviceman have been found.   There is also a Edward J HALL listed on the Elms Roll of Honour but, again, no details of this particular serviceman have been traced.   An Edward Joseph Hall, residing at 15 Worcester St, Cheltenham, is listed in the Cheltenham Voters List of 1918 as being absent on military service.   An Able Seaman Edward Joseph Hall, Royal Navy, J34748, HMS Vivid I, and later HMS Senator, was residing at 15 Worcester Street Cheltenham in 1918, 1919 and 1920.

 

HART Charles R Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Paul’s Church War Memorial and the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.      Cause and date of death, and burial location have not yet discovered. 

 

HAYDEN Harry Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.   Served as 202057, Pte, 2/4th Bn Glos Regt.   KIA in Belgium on 9th October 1917.   Details of his birth and connection with Cheltenham are unknown.

 

HIGGS Alfred Commemorated on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.   An Alfred Raymond Higgs was born in Cirencester in 1891 and resided at 17 Lewis Lane, Cirencester in the 1901 Census.   Served as 2277 (later 240469), Pte, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   No details of his death and burial have been found as yet.   Not listed in “Soldiers Died”.   Not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

 

HIGGS W Commemorated on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.   A William Charles Higgs was born in Cirencester in 1894 and resided at 17 Lewis Lane, Cirencester in the 1901 Census (see Alfred Higgs, above).   Served as 2241, Pte, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   No details of his death and burial have been traced.    Not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

 

HOBSON A Commemorated on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.   This man has not been identified and records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.   The 1901 Census reveals an Alexander Hobson, aged 11, residing at 404 High Street Cheltenham.

 

JENKINS Arthur William Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.   Served as 202910, Cpl, 5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   His date of death and burial records have not been traced as yet.

 

JONES J Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial as serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment.   Full regimental details are not known and no cause and date of death or burial records have been traced.   This could be a duplicate commemoration on the War Memorial of Pte Jesse Jones, 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.

 

MASON B H Commemorated on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour.   No details of this serviceman have been traced.   However, there is a possibility that this commemoration may refer to 10078, Pte, William Henry Mason, 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers, who died whilst at sea near Gallipoli on 11th May 1915.   He was born in Cheltenham in 1887 and enlisted in Newport, Monmouthshire.

 

NUNNEY Harry Victor Commemorated on the Badgeworth (Holy Trinity Church) Roll of Honour.   Harry Victor C Nunney was born in the Cheltenham area in 1895.   Served as 43528, Pte, 73 Company Labour Corps.   The 1901 Census records that he was 5 years old and living in Badgeworth.   Not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.   A Harry V C Nunney was registered as married in the Cheltenham area in Q4 1934 and dying in Gloucester in Q1 1971.

 

PARKER Stanley Commemorated on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.   Served as a Pte with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.   Could be one of up to three of this name who served and died with the Canadian Army.

 

PARSON J Listed on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.   This man has not been identified and records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.

 

PEARCE J Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial as serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment.   This man has not been identified and records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.

 

RICHARDSON George Commemorated on the Prestbury War Memorial and the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial.   This man has not yet been positively identified but could well be 343606, Carpenter’s Mate, George Richardson, Royal Navy, HMS Formidable, who died at sea on 1st January 1915.   Investigations continue.

 

ROBERTS G Commemorated on the St James Church Roll of Honour and notes regarding this Roll of Honour discovered in the Gloucestershire Archives indicate that the commemoration is to a Col G Roberts.   The only officer of this name and approximate rank to have died in the Great War is Lt Col Gerard Chipchase Roberts, Commanding Officer 14th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, who was killed in action on 8th June 1916 whilst leading a raid on enemy trenches.   No connection with Cheltenham has been found to date though he may well have had relatives living in the town at the time of his death.

 

SHAW J Commemorated on the St James’ School Roll of Honour and St James Church Roll of Honour and notes regarding the Church Roll of Honour discovered in the Gloucestershire Archives indicate that the commemoration is to a Pte J Shaw.   No details of a serviceman with this name connected with Cheltenham have been found to date.   A Joseph Tom Shaw was born in Cheltenham in Q4, 1897.

 

SIMPSON Alex Commemorated on the Bishops Cleeve War Memorial.   No details of the service or death of a man of this name have been traced to date, though this name has been found in the 1915 Voters List for Bishops Cleeve.

 

SIMS W A Commemorated on the Charlton Kings War Memorial and the Charlton Kings (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial.   This man has not been identified.   Records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.

 

SKEY William J Commemorated on the St John’s Church War Memorial.   No details of the service or death of this man have been traced as yet.

 

STANLEY George Henry Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial as serving with the 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.   He was discharged from the Army on 4th August 1916 on medical grounds and awarded a Silver War Badge (Serial 204734 on List L749).    He is listed in the Cheltenham Voters List for 1918 as absent on military service and residing at Llewellin Cottage, Sherbourne Street, Cheltenham.   No details of his death and burial have been traced as yet.   He is not commemorated in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

 

TAYLOR R F Commemorated on the St James Church Roll of Honour and notes regarding this Roll of Honour discovered in the Gloucestershire Archives indicate that the commemoration is to a Pte R F Taylor.   No details of the service or death of this man have been traced as yet.   The commemoration may refer to 2Lt Robert Fowler TAYLOR, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, who was killed in action in Italy on 23rd June 1918, and investigations continue.

 

WEAVER W Commemorated on the St James Church Roll of Honour and notes regarding this Roll of Honour discovered in the Gloucestershire Archives indicate that the commemoration is to a Pte W Weaver.   This serviceman has not been identified.   Records of his service and details of his death and burial are not yet known.
