Captain Alfred Sackville CRESSWELL, 2nd Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), is buried in Row X, Grave 4. He was killed in action on 13th May 1915 in the St Eloi area of Belgium. He was 37.
He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour. His parents, Mr C Estcourt Cresswell and Mrs Phoebe Cresswell resided at Leckhampton Hall, Shurdington Road, Cheltenham. He is commemorated on their grave in Leckhampton (St Peter’s) Churchyard. |

Lieutenant Rupert Vardon deBurgh GRIFFITH, 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, is buried in Row L, Grave 7. He was killed in action in the Ypres area of Belgium on 12th March 1915, aged 23.
He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Christ Church Roll of Honour and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour. He is also commemorated on the grave of a relative in Leckhampton (St Peter’s) Churchyard and on a commemorative plaque in Christ Church. His parents, Walter Hugh and Alice Mary Griffith resided at Tate’s Hotel, Cheltenham. An inscription on his headstone, below the cross, reads: “Sans Peur Et Sans Reproche Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori”, which translates to: “It is sweet and proper to die for one’s country”. |

Private Albert Victor TANNER, 2nd Battalion Prince of Wales’s Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians), is buried in Row L, Grave 2. He was killed in action in the Wytschaete area of Belgium on 24th June 1916, aged 27.
He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial. He resided at 38 Waterloo Street, Cheltenham prior to the war and left a widow, Kate Tanner, who resided at 54 Buckenham Street, Ellesmere Road, Sheffield after the war.
