“Cheltonians” buried in this Cemetery

Private William Ernest DREW, 24266, 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot I, Row E, Grave 10.  

He was wounded in action in July 1916 in the area North of Fricourt during the Battle of the Somme and died of wounds in a Casualty Clearing Station at Puchevillers on 18th July 1916.   He was 41.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the St Pauls Church War Memorial.

Pte Drew was born in 1875 and enlisted into the Gloucestershire Regiment in August 1915 when residing at Stroud.   His connection with Cheltenham is not yet known.

LCpl Thomas LITTLE, 9th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, is buried in Plot V, Row E, Grave 27.  

He was wounded in action on 26th October 1916 probably by shell-fire during fighting at the Ancre Heights during the Battle of the Somme.   He died of these wounds in a Casualty Clearing Station at Puchevillers on 30th October 1916.   He was 26.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

Thomas Little was born at Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, in 1890 and enlisted at Cheltenham in August 1914 into the Gloucestershire Regiment whilst residing at Upton on Severn.   He was later transferred to the 9th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

LCpl Alfred PERRY, 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers, is buried in Plot II, Row B, Grave 17.  

He was wounded in action near to Becourt Wood during the Battle of the Somme and died of these wounds in a Casualty Clearing Station in Puchevillers on 25th July 1916.   He was 30.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Mark’s Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, William and Agnes Perry resided at 9 Pretoria Terrace, St Marks, Cheltenham and his brother, George was killed in action in France a few weeks later on 1st September 1916.
