War Graves of the Great War in the Churchyard

Pte William Henry CAUDLE, Army Service Corps, is buried in the West of the Churchyard.

He died of pneumonia in the Prees Heath Military Hospital, Shropshire, on 6th July 1918, aged 31.

He is commemorated on the Leckhampton War Memorial, the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour, the Cheltenham War Memorial and the Cheltenham Grammar School Roll of Honour.

His parents, John and Ellen Caudle resided at “Grantham”, Leckhampton Road, Leckhampton and he left a widow, Mrs Florence May Caudle, who resided at 857 Garratt Lane, Tooting, London.

(The CWGC has been informed that his regimental number should properly be S/290589 and his service details should be the Army Service Corps. They will amend his records in the Debt of Honour Register and the regimental details on his headstone in due course.)

Colonel George Rainier CRAWFORD, Colonel Commandant of the 10th Battalion West Riding Regiment, is buried in the South of the Churchyard.

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 22nd August 1915, aged 53.

He is not commemorated in Cheltenham, Leckhampton or the local area.

His widow, Mrs Katharine Maud Crawford, resided at 2 Beechwood Villas, Hales Road, Cheltenham.

Captain James Ferrard DEARDEN, DSO, MC**, Mentioned in Despatches, 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers, is buried in the South of the Churchyard.

He died of illness due to war injuries in Cheltenham on 6th October 1919, aged 23.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, Pereguine Robert and Annie Abbott Dearden, resided at Langton House, Bath Road, Cheltenham and later at The Hotel Curtis, Cheltenham.

The CWGC erected the official headstone on his grave in April 2006.

Lt George Frederick DELMAR-WILLIAMSON, 13 Training Squadron RAF, is buried in the South of the Churchyard.

He was killed in a flying accident near Chippenham on 12th July 1918, aged 19.

Also killed in this accident was Captain Douglas Ridley Clunes GABELL, who is buried in St Lawrence’s Churchyard, Swindon Village.

Lt Delmar-Williamson is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Leckhampton War Memorial, the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Frederick and Emily Delmar-Williamson, resided at 8 Lansdown Place, Cheltenham and at “Firs Lodge”, Leckhampton.

Pte Frederick Walter HALL, 36th Training Reserve Battalion and 51st Battalion Hampshire Regiment (Training Reserve), is buried in the West of the Churchyard.

He died of pneumonia at the Beaufort Military Hospital, Fishponds, Bristol on 20th November 1918, aged 23.

He is commemorated on the Leckhampton War Memorial and on the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

He resided at “Gritmore”, Leckhampton Road, Leckhampton.

Pte Gilbert Charles HUNT, 6th (Reserve) Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, is buried in the West of the Churchyard.

He died of meningitis at the Devonport Military Hospital, Plymouth, on 12th April 1917, aged 18.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Lukes Church Roll of Honour and on the Leckhampton War Memorial.

His parents, Thomas and Clara Hunt, resided at 1 Sandford Terrace, Cheltenham and later at 2, Mapledene Cottages, Naunton Lane, Cheltenham.

Captain Maurice Desmond QUILL, Royal Marine Artillery, is buried in the South-West of the Churchyard.

He died of accidental injuries, caused by being thrown from his horse, at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar on 17th June 1918, aged 22.

He is commemorated on the Leckhampton War Memorial, the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour and on the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

His parents, Major General R. H. Quill, C.B., and Mrs Marion Muir Quill, resided at Craigleith House, Moorend Park Road, Cheltenham.

(CWGC were informed in February 2015 that Captain Quill had received the award of “Mentioned in Despatches” in the Despatch dated 30th November 1915 of Field Marshal Sir John French, GCB, GCVO, KCMG, Commanding-in-Chief, the British Army in France. CWGC were asked to update Capt Quill’s records in the Debt of Honour database to show this award).

Pte Frederick Walter REILLY, formerly of the Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in the South-West of the Churchyard.

Pte Reilly enlisted into the Gloucestershire Regiment on 11th March 1904 and served as a regular soldier until 17th February 1912 when he was transferred to the Army Reserve. He was mobilised on 5th August 1914 and served with 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in the BEF until 22nd October 1914 when he was medically evacuated to the UK suffering with TB.

He was discharged from the Army on 14th December 1914 as “No longer physically fit for War Service” under King’s Regulations para 392 (xvi).

He was awarded the Silver War Badge, serial 89145.

He died of TB in the UK on 22nd March 1919, aged 31.

He is commemorated on the Leckhampton War Memorial and on the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

His parents, George and Elizabeth Reilly resided at 4 Moorend Terrace. Leckhampton and he left a widow, Annie Reilly, of Cheltenham who resided at 2, Cotswold Cottages, Leckhampton.

Notes:

1. Crawford, Dearden, Delmar-Williamson and Quill have civilian headstones which are all officially recognised and listed in the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC.

2. Crawford is not listed an any War Memorial or Roll of Honour in the Cheltenham area.
