Notes:

1.   The 1/5th Battalion was formed in August 1914 from medically fit personnel of the 5th Battalion who had signed the Overseas Service Obligation.

2.   ARKELL had been discharged from the Army at the time of his death.

3.   RAWLINGS was detached from 1st Bn Glos Regt at the time of his death.

4.   WILLIAMS was attached to an artillery unit of the 4th Army at the time of his death.

Battalion History   –  1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment TF

 

 

Unit Formed:   1908 at Gloucester from 2nd Volunteer Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment

Home Station:   The Barracks, Gloucester

Mobilised:   4th August 1914.   1/5th Battalion and 2/5th Battalion formed at Gloucester in September 1914.   3/5th Battalion formed at Gloucester April 1915

Landed in France and joined BEF on 29th March 1915, part of 145th Infantry Brigade 48th (1st South Midland) Division).   Served in France and Flanders and, from November 1917 to September 1918, in Italy.   Returned to France in September 1918 and joined 75th Infantry Brigade of 25th Division.   At The Armistice the unit was based at Preux, near Landrecies.

War Casualties:   32 officers (7 from other Regiments) and 557 soldiers.

 

16 Battle Honours, earned at:   France and Flanders 1915 – 1917, Ypres 1917, Langemarck 1917, Somme 1916, Albert 1916, Pozieres, Broodseinde, Polygon Wood, Poelcapelle, Cambrai 1918, Hindenburg Line, Beaurevoir, Selle, Sambre, Italy 1917 – 18, and Piave.
