2Lt Donald William BAILEY, 12th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot XLIV, Row C, Grave 4.  

He was killed in action on 4th October 1917, aged 23, during the Battle of Broodseinde.

He is commemorated on the Bishops Cleeve War Memorial, the Southam War Memorial and the Cleeve Hill (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

His parents, William Thomas and Mary Lizzie Bailey, resided at Wickfield Lodge, Cleeve Hill, near Cheltenham.

The inscription on his headstone reads “Gone Where All Sorrows Cease”.

 

Pte Eric BARNETT, 8th Battalion Devonshire Regiment, is buried in Plot XLII, Row D, Grave 9.  

He was killed in action on 4th October 1917, aged 22, during the Battle of Broodseinde which in itself was part of the British offensive in the Ypres area known as “Third Ypres”.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the St Paul’s Church War Memorial.

Pte Barnett was born in Gloucester but lived with his parents at 13 St Paul’s Parade, Cheltenham.

The inscription on his headstone reads “For Freedom, His Sacrifice”.

 

 

Pte Ernest Charles Lambourne BATTEN, 4th Regiment, South African Infantry Regiment, is buried in Plot XI, Row C, Grave 11.

He was killed in action in the Passchendaele area of Belgium on 21st September 1917, aged 41.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the grave of a relative in Leckhampton (St Paul’s) Churchyard.

His mother, Mrs Emily Batten, resided at 15 Great Norwood Street, Cheltenham and he left a widow, Mrs A M Batten, who resided at 18 St John Street, Chichester.

 

 

Pte Frank BROWN, 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot XXXV, Row D, Grave 21.

He was killed in action in the Zonnebeke area of Belgium on  10th January 1918, aged 20.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Peter’s Church War Memorial and the Cambray Baptist Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Charles James and Alice Brown, resided at 39 Keynsham Street, Cheltenham.

 
   

Pte Lionel Victor CLARE, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, is buried in Plot XXXVII, Row E, Grave 17.

He was killed in action on 30th October 1917, aged 30, during the Battle of Passchendaele.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, Eldred Gascoigne and Lilly Clare, resided at 3 North Place, Cheltenham and he left a widow, Mrs Kathleen Margaret Clare, of 218 Saskatchewan Crescent, West Saskatoon, Canada.

The inscription on his headstone reads “Until The Day Break And The Shadows Flee Away”

 

Pte Jesse Arter MOODY, 15th Battalion Hampshire Regiment, is buried in Plot LVIII, Row B, Grave 23.

He was killed in action on 20th September 1917, aged 32, during the Battle of the Menin Road, Ypres.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial

His parents resided in Worcester and he was the nephew of Mr and Mrs Jesse Arter who resided at 17 Ormond Terrace, Regents Street, Cheltenham.

 
   

Pte Charles William PHIPPS, 8th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, is buried in Plot L, Row J, Grave 3.

He was killed in action on 1st August 1917, aged 31, at Pilckem Ridge on the second day of the third Battle of Ypres.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

His parents, Charles and Elizabeth Phipps, resided at 6 St George’s Parade, Cheltenham.

 

Pte Henry Charles William STEWART, 12th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot LXV, Row F, Grave 13.

He was killed in action on 4th October 1917, aged 22, in the Broodseinde area of Belgium.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham Post Office Roll of Honour.

His parents resided in Greet, near Winchcombe and he is also commemorated on the Winchcombe War Memorial.

The inscription on his headstone reads “His End Was Peace”

 
   

Pte Arthur Ernest TAYLOR, 45th Company Machine Gun Corps, is buried in Plot L, Row H, Grave 15.

He was killed in action on 23rd August 1917, aged 26, in the Langemarck area of Belgium.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St John’s Church War Memorial and the Cambray Baptist Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Charles and Mary Anne Taylor, resided at 22 Leighton Road, Cheltenham.

The inscription on his headstone reads “Faithful Unto Death”.
