Some apparent inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.

Commemoration on the Cheltenham War Memorial possibly refers to Pte John Thomas Haley, 4491, 1/6th Bn Glos Regt. He was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada in 1881 and enlisted into the British Army (3/6th Bn Glos Regt) at Bristol on 5th July 1915. He served in France with 1/6th Bn Glos Regt between 13th April 1916 and 22nd June 1916 but was returned to the UK as no longer physically fit for service. He was discharged from the Army on 19th September 1916 and awarded a service pension. His wife, Mrs Elizabeth Emma Haley nee Plested), whom he married in Cheltenham in early 1916, resided at 51a Jersey Street, Cheltenham and later at 8 Clare Place, Bath Road, Cheltenham. Details of death and burial have not yet been traced. Further research indicates that he married Miss Violet Beatrice Donnelly in St John, NB, on 25th June 1914. |

HARFORD, Maurice |

Commemorated on the Elms War Memorial. Refers to Pte, 52425, 12th Bn Somerset Light Infantry. Died of illness at 4th Northern General Hospital, Lincoln, on 3rd April 1919, aged 20. As he is listed on The Elms War Memorial he was in some way connected to the Cheltenham Union Workhouse. He was apprenticed as a tailor to Mr Thomas Cook and resided with the Cooks at 1, Keynsham Terrace, Hales Road, Cheltenham and later at “Berverston” Keynsham Street, High Street, Cheltenham. He is buried in the Newport Cemetery, Lincoln. His death was reported in the Lincolnshire Chronicle published on Saturday 19th April 1919. According to the British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal Rolls prepared by the Record Office of the Somerset Light Infantry in the 1920’s, Pte Harford served in the 6th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry and these medals were retained and later scrapped by the Army Medal Office due to no next of kin being traced. |
