Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS) John William ONION, 3/8th Battalion London Regiment (Post Office Rifles), is buried in Plot G/7850.

 

He died of illness at the Royal Herbert Hospital London on 21st March 1919, aged 46.

 

CQMS Onion is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

He resided at 7 Brighton Road, Cheltenham and left a widow, Mrs Clara Onion, who resided at 38 King Edward’s Gardens, Acton Hill, London.

Corporal Francis Howard PARGETER, Wiltshire Regiment and Labour Corps, is buried in Plot A1/113.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 20th April 1921, aged 28.

 

He is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Mabel Pargeter, who resided at 14 Normal Terrace, Swindon Road, Cheltenham.

 

The inscription at the base of the gravestone reads “Rest In Peace”.

 

(The original headstone showed his regimental details as the Wiltshire Regiment.   CWGC were informed in March 2007 that he served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment before transfer to the Labour Corps.   On 29th March 2007 the CWGC agreed to amend the headstone to the Royal Berkshire Regiment).

Private Ernest Jonah PASS, 2/6th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot N/1896.

 

He had been a POW of the Germans since March 1918 and was released in December 1918.   He was discharged from the Army on 27th February 1919.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 3rd March 1919, aged 22 and was buried in the cemetery on 5th March 1919.

 

He is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Elizabeth Pass, who resided at Delholme Cottage, High Street, Prestbury.

Private James PASS, 3/7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/947.

 

He died of illness in the Priory VAD Hospital Cheltenham on 12th November 1916, aged 31 and was buried in the cemetery on 15th November 1916.

 

He is not a Cheltonian and is not commemorated on any memorial in the area.

 

His parents, James and Rachel Pass, resided at Bromsgrove, Worcs.

Lieutenant Colonel William Barrington PIERS, Commanding Officer 10th (Reserve) Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, is buried in Plot R/3296.

 

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 27th June 1917, aged 58, and was buried in the cemetery on 2nd July 1917.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Mary Catherine Piers, who resided at Overton Lea, Parabola Road, Cheltenham.

Able Seaman Grenville Edgar PIGOTT, Royal Navy, HMS Nerissa, is buried in Plot P/2609.

 

He died of illness at sea, aged 40, aboard HMS Nerissa on 27th September 1917 but his body was returned to mainland UK and transported to Cheltenham for burial on 4th October 1917.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Paul’s Church War Memorial, and the Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Grenville and Sarah Pigott, resided at 11 Regent Place, Swindon Road, Cheltenham.

Driver Albert Edgar PRESTON, 16th Battery 41st Brigade Royal Field Artillery, is buried in Plot E/834.

 

He was wounded in action at the defence of Mons on 23/24th August 1914 and was evacuated to the Cambridge Military Hospital Aldershot, where he died on 10th September 1914.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the All Saints Church War Memorial.

 

His parents, John Samuel and Lucy Preston, resided at 32 Gloucester Place, Cheltenham.

 

The initials “A  C” were inscribed on the original headstone.   CWGC were informed of this in March 2007 and the stone was amended in March 2011.

Able Seaman Albert Henry PRICE, Royal Navy, HMS New Zealand, is buried in an unmarked grave in Plot Q/2832.

 

He was invalided from the RN on 30th January 1918 and died of illness in Cheltenham on 21st July 1921, aged 27.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His grandmother, Mrs Harriet Eggleton, resided at 30 Albert Street, St Peter’s, Cheltenham.

Notes:

1.   PARGETER is not commemorated in Cheltenham or the local area.

2.   PASS E J is not commemorated locally.   He is listed on the Lechlade (St Lawrence Church) Roll of Honour.

3.   PASS J has no obvious family connection with Cheltenham and is on a triple headstone with Loveridge and Morton who all died in a local VAD hospital.

4.   PIERS is buried in a civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.

4.   PRICE is buried in an unmarked civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.
