    Surnames – S

Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.

 

(It should be noted that the many Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

This commemoration on the All Saints Church War Memorial refers to 112243, Sgt, Archibald McDonnell Shaw, ‘G’ Special Company, Royal Engineers, who was killed in action on 6th May 1917, aged 27, and buried in Beaulencourt British Cemetery, Ligny-Thilloy (Plot III.E.28).

STEPHENSON Bernard Ernest

Served as 12238, Pte, 7th Battalion Gloucestershire regiment.   He is listed as STEPHENSON E on the Bishops Cleeve War Memorial and on the Southam War Memorial.   He was born ALBERT BERNARD SORRELL in Q1 – 1892.  In the DoHR his age at death and home address are not recorded.
