There are 3 original battlefield grave markers, returned from military cemeteries in France in the 1920s, in the churchyard.   LCpl Enoch’s has recently (April 2006) been adorned with a new brass plate.

Private Ernest Charles Lambourn BATTEN, 4th South African Infantry Regiment, is commemorated on the grave of his mother in St Peter’s Churchyard.

  

He was killed in action in the Passchendaele area of Belgium on 21st September 1917 and is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His mother, Mrs Emily Jane Batten, resided at 15 Great Norwood Street, Cheltenham.

Commander Stephen BOWLE-EVANS RN is commemorated on the family grave.

  

He died of illness on 15th October 1918 whilst based in Cape Town, South Africa on HMS Hyacinth.   She was one of three Highflyer-class protected cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.  Initially assigned to the Channel Fleet, she spent much of her early career as flagship for the East Indies Station.  She was reduced to Reserve in 1912 after a lengthy refit before becoming the flagship of the Cape of Good Hope Station in 1913.  After the beginning of World War I in August 1914, she spent the first few months of the war escorting convoys around South Africa. In early 1915, she was deployed to German East Africa to blockade the German light cruiser SMS Königsberg.

 

Commander Bowle-Evans is buried in the Dido Valley Cemetery, Simonstown.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

His father, Mr John Bowle-Evans, resided at 20 Lansdown Place, Cheltenham.

Lt Alan James CARLES, Royal Navy, HM Submarine E22, is commemorated on the grave of his brother.

 

He was killed in action at sea in HM Submarine E22 on 25th April 1916 in the North Sea off Harwich.   He is listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial to those lost at sea.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and the St Phillip’s Church Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, William Richard Carles and Helen Maude Carles, resided at “Silwood”, The Park, Cheltenham.

Pte James Richard CHESHIRE, 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is commemorated on the gravestone of a relative.

  

He was killed in action in the Armentieres area of France on 6th July 1915 and is buried in the Chapelle D’Armentieres Old Military Cemetery.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Leckhampton War Memorial and on the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

 

His mother, Mrs Sarah Cheshire, resided at “St Ives”, Church Road, Leckhampton.

Midshipman Vernon Hector CORBYN, Royal Navy, HMS Cressy, is commemorated on the family grave in the churchyard.

  

He was killed in action at sea when his ship was torpedoed on 22nd September 1914 in the North Sea off the coast of Holland.  

 

He is listed on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the All Saints Church War Memorial.

 

His father, Major Hector Corbyn, resided at Lypiatt Lawn, Lypiatt Road, Cheltenham.   His aunt, Miss Eveline Margaret Corbyn, resided at Easton Villa, Albert Road, Cheltenham.

Captain Alfred Sackville CRESSWELL, 2nd Battalion East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) is commemorated on the family grave.  

 

He was killed in action on 13th March 1915 in the St Eloi area of Belgium.  

 

He is buried in the Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery. 

  

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

 

In 1912 he changed his name to Sackville-Cresswell but his military records listed him as Cresswell.   He was associated with Leckhampton Hall, Leckhampton.

Colonel Arthur Houssemayne DU BOULAY, DSO, CdG, Royal Engineers,  is commemorated on the grave of his father in St Peters Churchyard.

  

He died of illness on 25th October 1918 at Fillievres, France where he is buried. 

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the All Saints Church War Memorial and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.  

 

His father, Colonel Woodford George Du Boulay, resided at “Marchmont”, Bayshill, Cheltenham.

2Lt Hubert Lionel Houssemayne DU BOULAY, 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, is also commemorated on his father’s grave.

  

He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 near Pozieres during the Battle of the Somme. 

 

He has no known grave and listed on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing, France.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the All Saints Church War Memorial, the Christ Church Roll of Honour and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.

Cpl Howard Alan FARRAR, 1/9th Battalion London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles), is commemorated on the grave of a relative.

  

He was killed in action on 24th April 1915 in the “Hill 60” area east of Zillebeke, Belgium.   He has no known grave and is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing, Belgium.

   

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Leckhampton War Memorial and the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, William David Farrar and Nellie Clare Jane Farrar, resided at “Highcombe”, Hall Road, Leckhampton.

Lt Cyril Egremont GAITSKELL, 2nd Battalion Leinster Regiment is commemorated on the grave of a relative.

  

He died of wounds at a Casualty Clearing Station in the Armentieres area of France on 19th October 1914 and is buried Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery in Armentieres.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Christ Church Roll of Honour and Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.  

 

He is also commemorated on a plaque situated in Christ Church, Cheltenham.

 

His father, Major Charles Gaitskell, resided at Waldon House, Lansdown Road, Cheltenham.

On the same headstone as Gaitskell, above, is a commemoration to Lt Rupert Vardon de Burgh GRIFFITH, 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers.  

 

He was killed in action on 12th March 1915 in the area south of Ypres, Belgium and is buried in the Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Christ Church Roll of Honour and the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.  

 

He is also commemorated on a plaque inChrist Church, Cheltenham.

 

His parents, Captain Walter Hugh de Burgh Griffith and Mrs Alice Mary Griffith, resided at Tate’s Hotel, Promenade, Cheltenham.

Major John Gwynne GRIFFITH, 32nd Lancers (Indian Army) is commemorated on the grave of his parents.

  

He was killed in action on 24th May 1915 in the Ypres area of Belgium and is buried in the Ypres Town Cemetery.

  

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

Major Griffith resided at 29 Park Place, Cheltenham and Fairfield House, Cheltenham.

Also commemorated is Lt Col William Walter Gilbert GRIFFITH, 32nd Lancers (Indian Army). 

 

He was killed in action on 22 April 1917 in Mesopotamia and having no known grave is listed on the Basra Memorial To The Missing.

  

He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

   

His parents, Lt Col John Gilbert Erskine Griffith and Mrs Fanny Augusta Griffith, resided at Fairfield House, Cheltenham.

Lt Gerald Charles Edward GLOSTER, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, is commemorated on the grave of his father.

  

He was killed in action on 6th November 1917 in the Passchendaele area of Belgium.  He has no known grave and is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing.

   

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour, the Leckhampton War Memorial and the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Brigadier General Gerald Meade Gloster CMG and Mrs Winifred Gloster, resided at “Oak Manor”, Hales Road, Cheltenham.

Captain Harry Norman LEE, 59th Scinde Rifles (Frontier Force), Indian Army, is commemorated on a relative’s grave.

 

He was killed in action on 19th December 1914 during operations near Givenchy, France.   His colleague, Lt William Arthur McCrae Bruce, was awarded a VC for gallantry in the face of the enemy during these operations.

 

Capt Lee has no known grave and is commemorated on the Neuve-Chapelle Indian Memorial To The Missing.

 

He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

He left a widow, Mrs Maude Lee.

Captain Bertie Charles LOUSADA, 1st Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment, is commemorated on the family plot.

 

He was killed in action on 9th May 1915 in the Zonnebeke area of Belgium, aged 27.

 

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His father, Captain Simeon Charles Lousada, resided at Shelburne Hall, Lansdown Road, Cheltenham.

He was killed in action at Ypres, but earlier than his brother on 2nd November 1914.

 

He is also listed on the Menin Gate Memorial To The Missing.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

 

His father, Captain Simeon Charles Lousada, resided at Shelburne Hall, Lansdown Road, Cheltenham.

Pte Frank Charles MURPHY, 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is commemorated on the grave of a relative.

  

He was killed in action in the St Venant-Baquerolles Farm area of France on 16th April 1918.  

 

He has no known grave and is listed on the Loos Memorial to the Missing.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Leckhampton War Memorial and on the Leckhampton (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

 

He resided at 2 Pilley Cottages, Pilley Lane, Leckhampton.

Major Douglas REYNOLDS, VC, 83rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, is commemorated on the grave of his father (IWM Ref 32312).

  

He died of wounds in the Duchess of Westminster’s Hospital, Le Touquet, France on 3 February 1916.

  

He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Lt Col Henry Charles Reynolds and Mrs Eleanor Reynolds, resided at “Thorncliff”, Lansdown Road, Cheltenham.

Captain Templer Henry SCOTT, 87th Punjabis, Indian Army, attached 47 Sikhs, is commemorated on the grave of his grandfather.  

 

He was killed in action in the Ypres area of Belgium on 26th April 1915.   He is buried in the Bedford House Cemetery near Ypres.

 

His connection with Cheltenham is unknown and he is not commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area.

 

He family were associated with 74 Madeley Road, Ealing, London.

Lt Robert Stratford Howard SAUNDERS, Royal Field Artillery, is commemorated on the family plot.  

 

He died of wounds on 12th April 1918 in Rouen, France and is buried in the St Sever Cemetery, Rouen.

 

His connection with Cheltenham is unknown and he is not commemorated on any local memorial.

 

His family were associated with “Cabra”, Shirley Avenue, Southampton.

2Lt John Lancelot Walmsley STOCK, 3rd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment, attached to 6th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, is commemorated on the grave of his father.

  

He was wounded by shrapnel in the Wancourt area of France on 3rd May 1917 and died later the same day.   He is buried in the Tilloy British Cemetery.

 

His is commemorated on theCheltenham War Memorial.

 

His parents, Lt Col John Nugent Stock and Mrs Caroline Louisa Stock, resided at “Langholm”, Hatherley Road Cheltenham.

He was killed in action on 16th November 1916 during the latter stages of the Battle of the Somme.

His parents, Lt Col John Nugent Stock and Mrs Caroline Louisa Stock, resided at “Langholm”, Hatherley Road Cheltenham.

Colonel Ernest Robert Rainier SWINEY, 39 Garwal Rifles, Indian Army, is commemorated on the grave of his parents. 

 

He was lost in the Mediterranean Sea south of Crete when his ship, the P&O Liner Persia was torpedoed and sunk on 30th December 1915.  

 

He is listed on the Chatby Memorial, Alexandria, Egypt.

 

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Christ Church Roll of Honour.

 

His parents, Major General George Swiney and Mrs Mary Frances Swiney, resided at Sandford Lawn, Bath Road, Cheltenham.

He was killed in action near Gheluvelt in the Ypres area of Belgium on 29th October 1914.

His parents, Barnard George Thompson and Mrs Susan Isobel Thompson, resided at The School House, Hall Road, Leckhampton.

Also commemorated is Sgt Sydney Barnard Thompson, 9th Lancers, who was killed in action near Messines a day before his brother, on 28th October 1914.

  

He has no known grave and is listed on the Le Touret Memorial to the Missing.
