   Observations

    Surnames – I

 

Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.

 

(It should be noted that the many Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

IDDLES Arthur Charles

Birth registered in Cheltenham Q3 – 1896.   Aged 20 at death.

INGLIS Arthur McCulloch

The Book, page 306

Commemorated on Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) Roll of Honour Tablet.

He was attached to the Tank Corps (initially Motor Machine Gun Service) between 12th July 1916 and 24th December 1918.

He was appointed as a Railway Transport Officer (Staff Class FF) on 24th December 1918.

IVIN Albert E

The Book, page 307

Birth registered in Cheltenham Q3 – 1889 as Albert Ernest.   Aged 27 at death.

IVIN Leonard

Add to The Book, page 307

Name added to Cheltenham War Memorial in September 2016.  

Birth registered in Cheltenham as Francis Leonard Ivin in Q4 – 1896.

In the 1901 Census he was registered as residing at Hester’s Way Cottages, Cheltenham and by the 1911 Census he, and his brother Charles, were farm labourers at Cowfield Farm, Ashchurch.

Enlisted into Lancashire Fusiliers, most probably in November 1914, whilst residing at Manchester.   Killed in action on the Somme on 9th July 1916, aged 19.   His body was never identified or recovered from the battlefield and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Cousin, Albert Ivin, whose details are above, was killed in action on the Somme on 3rd July 1916 serving with 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.

IZARD Francis Vallance

CWGC record date of death as 16th February 1915 in the DoHR.
