Women’s Royal Air Force Member Elizabeth Hannah Jane ROBERTS, 9th School of Aeronautics, Royal Air Force, based in Cheltenham, is buried in Plot O/2107.

She enlisted into the WRAF on 20th October 1918 but died of illness in Cheltenham on 28th October 1918, aged 20, during the world-wide influenza pandemic.

She was not previously commemorated on any memorial in the Cheltenham area until her name was added to the Cheltenham War Memorial in September 2016.

Her parents, John and Maria Roberts, resided at Woolstone, Glos and her father later resided 1 Hanover Street, St Paul’s, Cheltenham.   Her brother, James, resided at Oakland Cottages, Prestbury Road, Cheltenham, after the war.

(November 2015.  The CWGC have agreed to amend the headstone to reflect her correct age at death as 20).

 

Private Stanley ROBERTS, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot A1/683.

He died of illness whilst training with his unit in Winchester on 27th August 1915, aged 29.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the All Saints Church War Memorial and on the Holy Apostles Church Roll of Honour.

His parents, Thomas and Amelia Ann Roberts, resided at 1 Rosehill Cottages, Hales Road, Cheltenham.

 

 

 

 

 

Driver George “Dick” ROBINSON, Royal Army Service Corps, is buried in Plot N/1901.

He died of influenza/pneumonia on 27th February 1919, aged 36, at the Suffolk Hall VAD Hospital and was buried in the cemetery on 1st March 1919.

He is commemorated on the Bishops Cleeve War Memorial, the Southam War Memorial and on the Cleeve Hill (St Peter’s Church) Roll of Honour.

His parents, William and Eliza Robinson, resided at “Hillview”, Cleeve Hill, near Cheltenham and he left a widow, Mrs Rose Annie Robinson, who resided at Rose Cottage, Mill Lane, Feckenham, Redditch, Worcs.

 

Private Walter James ROFF, 13th (Home Service) Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, is buried in Plot M/1461.

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 6th January 1920, aged 49.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

He left a widow, Mrs Emily Roff, who resided at 4 Belmont Terrace, Portland Square, Cheltenham.

 

 

 

 

 

Pioneer Arthur Cecil Joseph RUSSELL, 30th Railway Labour Battalion, Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot B1/980.

He died of illness in the 1st Western General Hospital, Fazakerley, Liverpool on 13th September 1918, aged 43, and was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery on 19th September 1918.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St Paul’s Church War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

He left a widow, Mrs Annie Russell, who resided at 14 Bloomsbury Street, Cheltenham.

 

Corporal John SCREEN, 109th Protection Company Royal Defence Corps, is buried in Plot A1/906.

He died of illness in Abbey Wood, London, on 25th September 1916 aged 52 whilst serving at the Woolwich Arsenal.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

He left a widow, Mrs Clara Elizabeth Screen, who resided at 6 Bloomsbury Street, Cheltenham.

 

 

 

 

 

VAD Nurse Anna Madeline SHAW, British Red Cross Society, is buried in the family grave in Plot A1/3318.

Nurse Shaw worked at the New Court VAD Hospital, Lansdown Place, Cheltenham and died of illness in Cheltenham on 2nd March 1917, aged 33.   She was buried on 7th March 1917.

There is a commemoration to an “A Shaw” on the All Saints Church War Memorial but she appears not to be commemorated elsewhere in Cheltenham or the local area.

Her parents, Rev John and Georgette Matilda Shaw, resided at 17 Lypiatt Terrace, Cheltenham.

 

Gunner Arthur SMITH, 35th (Reserve) Battery, Royal Field Artillery, is buried in Plot A1/970.

He died of illness on 24th October 1918, aged 24

Gnr Smith is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

His parents, John and Mary Smith, resided at 36 Glenfall Street, Cheltenham.

 

 

 

 

 

Corporal William James SMITH, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, is buried in Plot B1/881.

He died of TB at the Cotswold Sanatorium, Cranham, on 18th February 1915, aged 37.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the St John’s Church War Memorial, the Charlton Kings War Memorial, the Charlton Kings (St Mary’s Church) Roll of Honour and the Coberley (St Giles’ Church) Roll of Honour.

His parents, Alfred and Alice Smith were from Charlton Kings and he left a widow, Mrs Alice Smith, who resided at 12 Churchill Road, Naunton Park, Cheltenham.

 

Captain Ernest Dudley SMYTHIES, Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot A1/1182.

He died of illness in the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank, London, on 16th July1918 aged 33 whilst attached to The War Office, London, and was buried on 20th July 1918.

Captain Smythies is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham.

His uncle, Commander Edward Powell Smythies, RN, resided at Springfield Lawn, The Park, Cheltenham.

(The incorrect badge (RAMC instead of RE) inscribed on Capt Smythies’ new headstone in 2006 was reported to the CWGC and amended in 2007).

 

 

 

 

 

 

Private Herbert Henry SPIERS, 7th (Reserve) Battalion Worcestershire Regiment TF, is buried in Plot W/11874.

His unit was stationed in Cheltenham when he died of illness in a local VAD Hospital on 18th December 1916, aged 40.

He is not a Cheltonian and he is not commemorated on any memorial in the town.

He left a widow, Mrs Ada Spiers, who resided at 55 Waterworks Road, Barbourne, Worcester.

 

1st Air Mechanic Frederick Gerald STRANGE, Royal Air Force, 75th Squadron RAF, is buried in Plot A1/1712.

He died of illness at a military hospital in Ipswich on 24th July 1918, aged 26 and was buried in the cemetery on 27th July 1918.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour and on the Cheltenham Grammar School Roll of Honour.

His parents, Frederick William and Ada Strange, resided at 5 Trinity Terrace, Portland Street, Cheltenham and later at 2 Priory Buildings, High Street, Cheltenham.

He left a widow, Mrs Mable Strange, who died of illness in Cheltenham on 18th October 1918.

 

 

 

 

 

Lance Corporal Sidney Charles STROUD, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, attached 9th Battalion London Regiment, is buried in Plot P/10179.

He was wounded in action in France on 22nd October 1918 and evacuated to the King George’s Hospital, Lambeth, London.   He died here on 16th December 1918, aged 20, and was buried in the cemetery on 23rd December 1918.

LCpl Stroud is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham Parish Church Boys School Roll of Honour.

His parents, Charles and Emily Stroud, resided at 6 Hereford Place, Swindon Road, Cheltenham.

 

 

Sapper George STUBBS, Railway Operating Department Royal Engineers, is buried in Plot A1/971.

He died of illness in a military hospital in Frensham Hill, Hants, on 28th October 1918, aged 36.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.

He left a widow, Mrs Edith Rose Packer, who resided at 5 Queen Street, St Peter’s, Cheltenham.

 

 

 

 

 

Sgt Harry Ernest SUCH, Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, is buried in Plot A1/1504.

He died of illness in Cheltenham on 26th April 1918, aged 41.

Sgt Such is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

He left a widow, Mrs Louie Such, who resided at “Belle-Ewart”, New Street, Cheltenham.

Notes:

1.   ROBINSON is commemorated on his grave as Dick Robinson.   It is a civilian grave which is recognised by the CWGC.

2.   SHAW is buried in a civilian grave which is not recognised by the CWGC.

3.   SPIERS is not a Cheltonian and is not commemorated in Cheltenham or locally
