Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.

(It should be noted that the many Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

The commemoration on the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour refers to SE/32327, Pte, William Uriah Newcombe, Army Veterinary Corps, who died of illness on 26th October 1918, aged 29, and is buried in an unmarked plot in Charlton Kings Cemetery, Plot 3/99.   He enlisted into the AVC on 17th October 1917 but was discharged on 3rd January 1918 and awarded a Silver War Badge, number 496514.   His birth was registered in Cheltenham in Q1-1889 and he was baptised in St James’ Church on 10th March 1889.   At the time his parents, William and Clara Newcombe, resided in the Plough Hotel Yard, Cheltenham.   At the time of his death, his father was residing at 6 Berkeley Avenue, Cheltenham.   William Newcombe is also commemorated on the Holy Trinity School Roll of Honour.

This commemoration on the Badgeworth (Holy Trinity Church) Roll of Honour refers to 43528, Pte, Harry Victor Cripps Nunney, Labour Corps.   Birth registered in Cheltenham in Q3-1895.   Parents, James and Sarah, resided at Hope Villa, Upper Hatherley, Cheltenham.   Brother of James Sydney Nunney, below.   Research has indicated that Harry Nunney died in Gloucester in Q1, 1971.
