Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication “Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War”.

(It should be noted that the many Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

CHAMBERLAIN Jesse Edmund

Born in Tirley, near Tewkesbury on 14th January 1891.   In the 1911 Census, he was residing with his parents (Edmund and Rosa) and siblings at Tirley Street, Tewkesbury.   His occupation was a farm labourer.

On 24th July 1915, he married Louisa May Veale at Cheltenham and then on 10th December 1915, at Cheltenham, enlisted into the Army under the Derby Group Scheme.   He was called up on 13th August 1917 for service in the Royal Marines and underwent recruit training at Deal before posting to 1st (Reserve) Battalion RMLI in France on 5th October 1917.   He was posted to 1st RMLI on 3rd May 1918 and served with this unit until taken as a Prisoner of War by the Germans on 29th September 1918.   Pte Chamberlain was released and repatriated on 21st November 1918.   He was demobilised on  3rd March 1919.

His death was registered at Gloucester in Q2 – 1971, aged 80.

CHIVERTON, Robert

Enlisted into the RAMC on 10th September 1914 and served in France until being diagnosed with TB in early 1916.   He was returned to the UK and was discharged from the Army on 8th July 1916 whilst serving at the Depot RAMC.   He was awarded a Silver War Badge and an Army Pension.   He died of TB in Enfield on 24th February 1917 and is buried in Plot 102B Lavender Hill Cemetery, Enfield.   Birth registered in Bolton in Q4-1892.   Aged 24 at death.   A case has been presented to the MoD/CWGC for him to be classified as a war casualty.

The commemoration on the Elms Roll of Honour refers to TR/8/30964, Pte, Arthur George Clapham, 53rd (Young Soldiers) Battalion Hampshire Regiment who died of illness in the Fargo Hospital, Durrington, Wilts, on 19th October 1918.   His birth was registered in Cheltenham in Q3-1900 and he was aged 18 at death.   He is buried in Plot 3/100 in Charlton Kings Cemetery, which is unmarked.   He is commemorated with an official CWGC headstone which is located at Plot 3/106.   Also commemorated on this headstone is LCpl Frederick John Addis who is buried in Plot 3/103 who may be related.

The commemoration on the Salem Baptist Church Roll of Honour refers to 8386, Pte, Arthur Thomas Claydon, who was killed in action in Belgium on 1st November 1914.   He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.   His name was mentioned in the 1915 Annual Report of the Gas Green Chapel and Sunday School but other connections with Cheltenham have yet to be determined.   He was born in Northampton in Q4-1889.

CLEE, Douglas H

Birth registered as Douglas Henry Clee in Q1-1887.  He served in the RAMC and in the Army Ordnance Corps prior to serving in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force.   He was admitted to the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital in London in August 1917 whilst on leave and after some treatment was discharged from the RAF on 9th July 1918.   He died in a hospital in Brentwood, Essex, on 3rd February 1919 but the details of his burial have not yet been traced.   A successful case was submitted to MoD/CWGC for him to be classified as a war casualty.

Birth registered as Charles Edward Compton in Cheltenham in Q1 – 1887.   Enlisted into 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Battalion on 11th September 1914 but was discharged as unfit for further service 6 weeks later.   He was called up for Home Service and enlisted into 11th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment on 23rd June 1915 but was subsequently discharged because of illness, not related to service, on 18th May 1916.   Awarded Silver War Badge and Army pension.   Died of illness in Cheltenham on 4th July 1917, age 30, and is buried in an unmarked grave in Plot N/1739 in Cheltenham Cemetery.   His mother, Mrs Maria Compton, resided at 21 Queen Street, Cheltenham and at 27 Sun Street, Cheltenham.

DoHR states date of death is 18th April 1918 – in SDGW he is recorded as dying of wounds on 19th April 1918.   The 18th April 1918 the Germans attacked the lines in and around Festubert where the 1st Battalion was stationed.  The actions are now known as the Battle of Bethune and lasted for all of the 18th April.   It may well be that Pte CREED was wounded on the 18th April, evacuated to one of the two Canadian Casualty Clearing Station located near Pernes, and died there being buried in Pernes British Cemetery.

There are two CREED W commemorated on the St Peter’s Church War Memorial.   One is as listed above and the other is most probably William Creed, who served as 4090, Pte, 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment before transferring to 648th Company Labour Corps.   He died on 7th December 1918 and is buried in Plot A1/974 in Cheltenham Cemetery.   He may have been the father of the above.
