Clerk Basil St Merryn CARDEW, Royal Navy, who was killed in action at sea serving with HMS Monmouth on 1st November 1914 at the Battle of Coronel is commemorated on the grave of his parents.
He is not commemorated on any memorial in the Prestbury or Cheltenham area. His parents, the Rev William Berry and Mrs Frances Augusta Garnsey Cardew resided at the Perlethorpe Parsonage, Newark, Notts. Their connection with Prestbury is not known. He was the cousin of Lt John St Erme Cardew RN, who died of illness 9th January 1917 and who is buried in Great Witcombe (St Mary’s Churchyard). |

Private Albert Edward GIBBINS, 8th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry is commemorated on the grave of his father. He was killed in action in the Arras area of France on 11th April 1917 and is buried in the Orange Trench Cemetery, France. He is listed on the Prestbury War Memorial and on the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial. His father, Mr Albert Gibbins, resided at 2 Lynworth Terrace, Prestbury Road, Cheltenham.

Rifleman Percy Goddard GARRAWAY, 8th Battalion (Winnipeg Rifles) Canadian Expeditionary Force is commemorated on a small family stone in St Mary’s Churchyard. He died of wounds at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 12th November 1917 and is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the St Paul’s Church War Memorial. His parents, Mr and Mrs James and Susan Garraway, resided at 7 Marle Hill Parade, Cheltenham. |

2Lt Lionel Bruce MABY, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, is commemorated on a family gravestone. He was killed in action at Havrincourt, France, on 12th September 1918 and is buried in the Vaulx Hill Cemetery, Vaulx Vracourt, France. He is commemorated on the All Saints Church War Memorial, the Grammar School Roll of Honour, the Prestbury War Memorial and the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial. His parents, Mr and Mrs Joseph Maby, resided at Marle Hill House, Evesham Road, Cheltenham. |

Commemorated on the grave of their father in St Mary’s Churchyard are the brothers Ernest Edward and Frank Leslie PARKER.
Ernest was serving with 8th Battalion Devonshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 5th October 1917 in the Ypres area of Belgium. He is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial To The Missing. Frank was serving with 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards when he was killed in action on 25th October 1918 in France. He is buried in the Vaast Communal Cemetery, France. Both are listed on the Prestbury War Memorial and on the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial. Their parents, Frank Augustus and Emma Parker, resided at Darkes Farm, Prestbury. |

Pte Edgar ROBINSON, 3rd Battalion Gloucestershire Regt who died in the Royal Herbert Military Hospital Woolwich on 23rd February 1915 is commemorated on a family grave. He is buried in the Woolwich Cemetery, London. He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Prestbury War Memorial and on the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial. His brother Edward is commemorated on another plot within the churchyard (see photo below). His parents, James and Harriet Robinson resided at Unity Cottage, Prestbury and later at “Illerton”, Cemetery Road (now Bouncers Lane), Cheltenham. |

Pte Edward ROBINSON, 12th Battalion Gloucestershire Regt, brother of Edgar above, is commemorated on this plot in St Mary’s Churchyard. He was killed in action on the Somme on 3rd September 1916. He has no know grave and is listed on the Thiepval Memorial To The Missing. He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the Prestbury War Memorial and the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial. His parents, James and Harriet Robinson resided at Unity Cottage, Prestbury and later at “Illerton”, Cemetery Road (now Bouncers Lane), Cheltenham. |

Major John Francis Sumption, 14th Battalion Canadian Infantry is commemorated on the grave of his father in St Mary’s Churchyard.
He died of wounds on 22nd October 1916 received in the Le Transloy area of France and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen.
He is commemorated on the Prestbury War Memorial and on the Prestbury (St Mary’s Church) War Memorial.
His parents, George James and Mary Sumption were associated with the Post Office, Prestbury and his wife resided later at “Kilmuir” Oakdene Road, Holloway Hill, Godalming, Surrey.
